The following well-balanced and nutritious Friendship Meals will be served for lunch at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Meals are served with milk; donations for coffee and tea are accepted.

USD 428, Holy Family, Central Kansas Christian Academy and HeadStart Schools

The following meals will be served February 25 through March 1. The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.

Registration due for Kansans Optimizing Health Workshop

The Kansans Optimizing Health Program (KOHP) is an interactive workshop that meets for 2.5 hours once a week for six weeks. This workshop will help participants set goals, develop a plan and track progress toward improving their health – one step at a time. This evidence based program, designed at Stanford University, is for individuals with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, asthma, stroke and other chronic health conditions. Emotional appetite

Since we were snowed in Thursday and Friday, I was not able to share the educational program titled, "Emotional Appetite: The Food and Mood Connection" so I will emphasize the important points in my column. There is no doubt that your mood has a lot to do with many of the foods you crave when you are not physically hungry. Eating to feed an emotion instead of physical hunger is considered emotional eating. Stress, depression, loneliness, frustration, anxiety, and anger are just a few emotions that can trigger cravings. Lightner to display work in Sterling College art show

Jodi Lightner '01 will be showcasing her artwork in an exhibit at Sterling College on Feb. 28, with a reception from 5-7 p.m. in the Art and Media Center gallery. Lightner's show, "Escape Route (Flight)," will display works created with acrylic, ink, graphite and oil on Mylar that she has developed over the past three years. The exhibit will be on display through March 18.

‘I’ve Loved Every Minute’

Tuesday was a difficult day at the office for everyone involved at Rosewood Furniture Gallery, located in downtown Great Bend. The Gallery's one and only manager Sandy Smith was saying goodbye on her final day there before retiring. Tears fell like rain as the manager and her client-employees grasped the magnitude of the moment. It was the end of a mentor-employee relationship that began more than 11 years earlier for some at the Gallery.

New Ysa class gathers in Topeka for first session

Twenty young livestock producers from across the state met in Topeka Feb. 18-19 for the first installment of the 2013 Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) Young Stockmen's Academy (YSA). Merck Animal Health once again is partnering with the association to host these members for an in-depth look into KLA and the beef industry. A series of four seminars will be held throughout the year in various locations in Kansas.

Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.

Thunder on the Plains opens NHRA West Central Division

S.R.C.A Dragstrip will host Thunder on the Plains on May 15-17 at 455 W. Barton County Rd.; 2½ miles west of Great Bend on the old Air Force base. The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000.
