Torrential rain fell for more than 24 hours resulting in flash flooding, landslides and rivers overflowing their banks. Reports of impassable roads, loss of crops and livestock are widespread throughout rural Haiti.

Genevieve "Jennie" Alefs, 92, died surrounded by her family, on Oct. 25, 2012 at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington. She was born Nov. 15, 1919 at St. Leo, the daughter of Joseph and Appolonia Thresia (Schommer) Schulte.
TOPEKA - The Kansas Supreme Court in Topeka is considering the appeal of a man sentenced to die over the killings of a Great Bend couple in 2004.

LARNED - Troy Dean Davis, 43, passed away Jan. 16, 2015, at his home in Larned. He was born Jan. 3, 1972, in Great Bend, the son of Jerrold Dale and Sheryl Lynn Suchy Davis. A lifetime area resident, he was a service technician at Harper Camper Land in Great Bend.
It has been a hectic nine days for the Barton Community College men's basketball team. Nine days that including five games, three suspensions, two ranked opponents and one rival. Oh, yeah, and four wins.
It has been a rugged five days for the Barton Community College women's basketball team. About as tough a 5-day stretch as any team in the nation will see this season. It came to a conclusion Wednesday night with a loss Hutchinson, 73-45 at the Barton Gym.
After the tragic shooting at a provocative magazine in Paris last week, I pointed out that given the foreign policy positions of France we must consider blowback as a factor. Those who do not understand blowback made the ridiculous claim that I was excusing the attack or even blaming the victims. Not at all, as I abhor the initiation of force. The police blaming victims when they search for the motive of a criminal.

HOISINGTON - Robert Frank James, 83, died Jan. 15, 2015 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend.

Trinity Ladies Fellowship of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, will hold their January joint meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, in the church parlor. Their guest speakers will be Christy Tustin and Melanie Calcara, representatives of Prairie Godmother Funds.

The plan for Hays Medical Center and Centura Health to co-own St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgical Center is now official, a spokesman for HaysMed announced Thursday. With the signing of the joint venture, it will now be known at St. Rose Health Center.
