DODGE CITY – Clarence E. McConnaughy, 69, died July 9 at Trinity Manor Nursing Home in Dodge City. Born Oct. 8, 1942 in Great Bend, he was the son of Clarence E. McConnaughy Jr. and Martha (Kutnick) McConnaughy. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State University. On Oct. 14, 1961, he married Marsha Hoge in Great Bend. A resident of Dodge City since 1966 moving from Great Bend, he worked for Skaggs, George-Nielson Motors and Dodge City International.
LA CROSSE - Terra Maryha Helm, 37, died on July 8 at her home. Born March 28, 1975 in Bath, Maine, she was the daughter of Mark A. and Katherine M. (Steadman) Helm Fisher. She moved from her birthplace of Bath, Maine, at an early age. A former resident of Great Bend, Hays and Wichita, she was a resident of La Crosse since her high school graduation from La Crosse High School in 1993.

Theft of a white Cadillac Seville from 1603 Morton St. in Great Bend was reported at 12:03 a.m. Saturday. At 2:53 a.m. an individual reported finding the car, which had been involved in an accident, on Railroad Ave. and U.S. 56 (Patton Road). The car had gone through the intersection westbound, missing the curve, and hitting a stop sign and a curve indicator sign.

After a night of patrolling, a Barton County Sheriff's Office deputy returned to headquarters Sunday morning and discovered the patrol car had been sideswiped somewhere in the county. The vehicle, a 2014 Dodge Charger, had damage and paint transfer from another vehicle on the passenger-side doors and rear quarter panel.
Two male inmates in separate pods at the Barton County Jail attempted to hang themselves using sheets this past weekend, Undersheriff Bruce Green confirmed Tuesday. In each instance, another inmate noticed what was happening and alerted a detention officer before serious injury occurred.
An accident was reported at 11:33 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, on West K-4 near NW 70 Ave. According to the Barton County Sheriff's Office, a 1993 Dodge Dakota driven by Larry C. Thiel Jr., 34, La Crosse, rear-ended a manure spreader driven by Robert L. Crites, 50, of Ellinwood, as Crites attempted to make a left turn into a private drive. Both drivers and a passenger in the Dodge, 24-year-old David A. Deistchle of Otis, were wearing seat belts. Jack Daubert, 61, died Oct. 19 at Hutchinson Regional Hospital. Born in Great Bend, on April 9, 1953, he was the son of Herman and Wanda (Riemann) Daubert. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1972. Jack worked as a Certified Medical Assistant at "The Cedars" retirement community in McPherson. He was a longtime resident of Great Bend.
