Abelardo Sotelo, M.D., found a new home at St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgery Center last summer and this fall he discovered his second home. The orthopedic surgeon is now performing surgeries at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington in addition to his St. Rose procedures.

Verlie Eugene “Tex” Marymee 1920 - 2012

Verlie Eugene "Tex" Marymee, 92, died Dec. 19 at Leisure Homestead in St. John. Born Nov. 7, 1920, in Larned, he was the son of Roy Wallace and Ruby Marie (Grizzle) Marymee. On March 1, 1942, he married Dorothy Kruckenberg in Las Vegas, N.M. She died on Sept. 10, 1978. He then married Ruth L. (Carpenter) Burton on April 4, 1987, in Willits, Calif. She died on Oct. 4, 2003. A resident of Great Bend since 1989, coming from Reno, Nev., he worked for the Police and Fire Departments in Julesburg, Colo. He was known as "Tex the Clown ...

I was privileged this past week to be a "involved observer" for the Christmas Bird Count at Quivira Refuge. My mentor for this event was Bob Gress, who recently retired from the Great Plains Nature Center in Wichita. His attributes include being a learned and very respected birder, and his photographic skills are well known to everyone who has seen the "Birds of Kansas" which he co-authored with David Seibel and Judd Patterson. Star of Hope seeking donations

ELLINWOOD - Star of Hope in Ellinwood is seeking donations for a Haitian four-year-old, Emmanuela, who has sickle cell anemia. She lost her parents in the earthquake and was taken in by another family with eight children.

The following well-balanced and nutritious Friendship Meals will be served for lunch at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Meals are served with milk; donations for coffee and tea are accepted.

USD 428 Summer Menu

USD 428 Great Bend School Food Service will offer the summer lunch program at Eisenhower, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Park, and Riley Elementary Schools. The program will run from June 1 through June 25, (Monday through Thursday). Breakfast is served at Park and Riley only. There is no charge for anyone age 1 through 18. Sites are open to all children regardless of where they attend school. Parents may eat with their children for $3.50 for lunch or $2 for breakfast. All food must be consumed on site.

Dale Burroughs of Ellinwood will celebrate his 80th birthday with an Open House from 2 to 4 p.m. on June 27, at the upstairs room of The Lone Wolf Restaurant, 108 East 1st Street, in Ellinwood. The event will be hosted by his children and their spouses David and Pam Burroughs of Wichita and Dana and Jerry Pfanenstiel of Scott City. He has five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
