Michael James "Mike" Keenan 1930 - 2012

Michael James "Mike" Keenan, 81, died June 6 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born Oct. 7, 1930, at Great Bend, he was the son of William Patrick and Flora Belle Ridge (Sargent) Keenan. On Sept. 16, 1951, he married Myrla C. Walter in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a production foreman for Petroleum Management Inc.

Reita Mae Gabel 1938 - 2012

NESS CITY - Reita Mae Gabel, 73, passed away on June 6 at the Rhode Island Suites in Ransom. Born July 4, 1938, in Marion she was the daughter of George and Lorena Kuhn Bessel. On July 4, 1956 she married Milton "Stubby" Gabel in Oak Harbor, Mich. They were divorced and he later preceded her in death in May of 2002. She worked as a nurses' aide for many years.

Church ministers with scrapbook group

ELLINWOOD - The Memory Makers scrapbooking group will host a two-day scrapping event beginning today at noon at First Baptist Church, located at 503 A SE 110 Ave. in rural Ellinwood. The event will continue today until midnight and will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday, continuing to 9 p.m. Admission is free, but participants are asked to bring a snack to share, said Pam Hendricks with the church. No reservation is needed.

Timothy Joseph Miller, 72, died June 7 in Great Bend, following a brief struggle with cancer. He was born Jan. 24, 1940, at El Dorado, the son of Cyril W. "Cy" and Frances Cecelia (Muth) Miller. Democrats Have a Corruption Problem

Senator Bob Menendez will soon be indicted on corruption and obstruction of justice charges stemming from his relationship with Salomon Melgen, a West Palm Beach eye doctor. Melgen thought he could get away with Medicare fraud because he gave Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid's Super PAC $700,000 and lavished Menendez with private jet flights to his luxury resort. Given the known public facts, Harry Reid should return Melgen's money to the taxpayers he stole it from and should ask Menendez to resign.

Anthony tabbed 2nd team All Jayhawk West

A pair of standout seasons ended with a second team All Jayhawk West selection for Phikala Anthony. The Memphis sophomore just missed a first team selection as the highest vote total on the second team. She was the lone Barton Community College Cougars to earn recognition.
