GARDEN CITY - The Great Bend High School girls' swimming team took first place at the Garden City swim meet on Tuesday.
The Kansas Oil and Gas Museum Foundation of Great Bend is again presenting its triennial Kansas Oil and Gas Hall of Fame Awards Banquet Saturday at the Highland Hotel Convention Center, 3017 10th St. in Great Bend.
This weekend Ellinwood High School will be having prom at St. Joseph Parish Center. It is the Ellinwood Police Departments hope that everyone who chooses to attend prom has a very good time. My main concern is what will occur after prom. I have been informed that there are no plans to have an after-prom party at the Ellinwood Grade School as there has been in past years. I have also been informed, at least the rumor mill has stated, that there is the real possibility of some under-age drinking parties occurring due to there not being an after-prom party.

ELLINWOOD - Eunice E. Harrelson, 75, died April 5 at her home in Independence, La. She was born Feb. 24, 1936, at Tanga Pahoa, La., the daughter of Henry Devoe Spillman and Ada Belle Jenkins. She married Bobbie Glen Harrelson on Nov. 23, 1966, in New Orleans, La. He died July 13, 2010. A resident of Baptist and Independence, La., for the past 16 years, she had also lived in Valley Center, Kan., for 36 years.
Helping Hands Preschool, along with Barton County Cooperative of Special Services and USD #428 - Great Bend, is looking for children to fill a limited number of openings still available in the 4-Year-old At-Risk Program for the 2011-2012 school year. This free program is sponsored by a grant from the Kansas State Board of Education. Helping Hands Preschool offers this program for children living in the Great Bend school district.

AKFIELD, Tenn. - Edward "Butch" Lee Sanders, 68, died Feb. 12. He was born in Great Bend in 1945. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1965. In 1967, he married Maggie Van Horne in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was a computer programmer at Northwestern Bell from 1970-1994.
Louise Dryer, 97, died April 7 at Scott County Hospital, Scott City. Services are pending with Bryant Funeral Home.
CLAFLIN - Lyle Kent McDermed, 78, was born Jan. 17, 1936, in Lyons, to Carvin and Wilma (Kent) McDermed. Lyle passed away April 6, 2014. Lyle spent his childhood in Kansas where he was a graduate of Claflin High School and Emporia State University.
