Demel earns First Scholar scholarship

Julie Demel, a senior at Central Plains High School, has received a First Scholars scholarship to attend Kansas State University. Scholars receive a $5,000 scholarship over four years for a total of $20,000.

USDA Invests $73 million in critical infrastructure projects and assessments to provide public safet

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $73 million to rehabilitate dams across the nation in an effort to protect public health and safety and evaluate the expansion of water supply in drought stricken areas. USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is investing in approximately 150 projects and assessments in 23 states. "Millions of people depend on watersheds and dams for protection from floods and providing clean drinking water," Vilsack said. "By investing in this critical infrastructure, we are helping to ensure a safe, resilient environment for rural America."

Foundation awards nearly $100,000 in community grants

The Russell County Area Community Foundation is pleased to announce the 2015 spring grant recipients. The Foundation received 37 grant applications with requests totaling more than $200,000. A total of $99,620 in grants were awarded for charitable projects across the Russell County area.

American Double Standards on Display in Ukraine

Last week two prominent Ukrainian opposition figures were gunned down in broad daylight. They join as many as ten others who have been killed or committed suicide under suspicious circumstances just this year. These individuals have one important thing in common: they were either part of or friendly with the Yanukovych government, which a US-backed coup overthrew last year. They include members of the Ukrainian parliament and former chief editors of major opposition newspapers.

Ellinwood’s McKenna Rugan signs with Emporia State track

ELLINWOOD- Ellinwood track standout McKenna Rugan will be taking her talents to Emporia State next season. Rugan has won seven state track medals her first three years with the Eagles. She has been a part of three school records in the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 meter relays. McKenna was also on three state runner up teams: two in cross country, one in track. Rugan is the fifth Ellinwood track athlete to sign in the last two years. She is the seventh to be offered a scholarship.

Paul George Dietz 1918-2015

RUSSELL - Paul George Dietz, 96, passed away April 21, 2015 at the Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Nov. 3, 1918, on the family farm in Russell County just north of Bender Hill, he was the son of Ferdinand and Pauline (Karst) Dietz. He grew up in the Bender Hill area and graduated in the Class of 1938 from Russell High School. On June 22, 1947, he was united in marriage to Hilda Bender at the Trinity Bender Hill Lutheran Church. He worked in the grocery business during high school and later owned and operated Dietz Meat Processing Company in Russell ...
