ELLSWORTH - Elma G. Soukup, 93, died Oct. 12 in Wilson. She was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Ellsworth County, to Joseph and Mattie (Belt) Zelenka. A lifetime resident of the area, she was a homemaker and farm wife. On Nov. 22, 1938, she married Emil H. Soukup in Ellsworth. He preceded her in death June 26, 1992.

A Veterans Service Representative for the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Great Bend Kansasworks center at 1025 Main Street to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend has released more information about a robbery reported Saturday morning by a Great Bend resident.
Average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 3.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.26 Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,329 gas outlets in Kansas. This compares with the national average that has increased 5 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.40.

The Great Bend High School Speech team placed in 11 events at the Nickerson Speech Tournament. Those placing were Makinna Dykes, Kris Gieck and Ashtin Heath. Ashtin placed in both of her events. Those placing in all of their events and qualifying for the State Speech Championship Tournament in May are Malia Clark, Jesus Sandoval and Carter Sheffield. Carter Sheffield also won the Triathlon Award by placing the highest in all three of his events. He placed 1st in Extemporaneous Speaking, 1st in Serious Solo Acting and 3rd in Impromptu Speaking. The team placed 3rd overall.
