Richard L. "Dick" Budig, 81, of Great Bend, died Friday, Aug. 19 at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Feb. 9, 1930, at Redwing, the son of Anton and Eleanor (Mauler) Budig. Richard married Mary Ann Dobson May 20, 1949 at Stockton. She preceded him in death on April 30, 1998. He was a Great Bend resident since 1993 coming from Derby, working for Younger Energy as an oilfield pumper before retiring in 2007.

Walk into the Kansas Raptor Center at Brit Spaugh Zoo and you'll instantly enter the world of Ornithology. Instead of feeling like you are studying birds, however, you will feel like you just encountered them in their natural habitat. Three permanent exhibits with life-like birds, trees, grasses and plants were installed in early July, and three traveling exhibits were also added. The exhibits provide a fun way to learn for kids of all ages, said Brit Spaugh Zoo Director Scott Gregory.

LARNED - Troy Dean Davis, 43, passed away Jan. 16, 2015, at his home in Larned. He was born Jan. 3, 1972, in Great Bend, the son of Jerrold Dale and Sheryl Lynn Suchy Davis. A lifetime area resident, he was a service technician at Harper Camper Land in Great Bend.
It has been a hectic nine days for the Barton Community College men's basketball team. Nine days that including five games, three suspensions, two ranked opponents and one rival. Oh, yeah, and four wins.
It has been a rugged five days for the Barton Community College women's basketball team. About as tough a 5-day stretch as any team in the nation will see this season. It came to a conclusion Wednesday night with a loss Hutchinson, 73-45 at the Barton Gym.
After the tragic shooting at a provocative magazine in Paris last week, I pointed out that given the foreign policy positions of France we must consider blowback as a factor. Those who do not understand blowback made the ridiculous claim that I was excusing the attack or even blaming the victims. Not at all, as I abhor the initiation of force. The police blaming victims when they search for the motive of a criminal.
As the controversy builds over anything and everything relating to Barack Obama, many Republicans have come to believe that their party will prosper as a result.
