ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - Jadeveon Clowney's new coordinator at South Carolina was most impressed by what he didn't hear from his signee as the two spoke Monday.
RAYMOND - Otis Blackburn, 87, died Feb. 12 at Raymond. Born Aug. 31, 1923 in Cushing, Okla., he was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Willie Mae Lowe Blackburn. A resident of Raymond most of his life, he was a retired truck driver and mechanic. On May 16, 1941, he married Altus Higgins in Pawnee, Okla. In 1964 he married Jenny Melton. She died on Nov. 30, 1994.
MANHATTAN – Mary Helen Volkmann, 98, died Feb. 10 at Mercy Regional Hospital, Manhattan. She was born Sept. 6, 1912, at WaKeeney, the daughter of Edward David and Ethel Mae (Dorns) Hobbick.
LEAVENWORTH - Charles "Charlie" Sydney Brown, 76, was born in Leavenworth, Oct. 13, 1934, to Lucy Elizabeth "Betty" Bromell Brown and Ralph C. Brown, and died Feb. 11, at his home in rural Leavenworth. He married Regina Mary "Jean Marie" Theis Brown, on June 29, 1957, at Corpus Christi Church, Mooney Creek.
HUTCHINSON - Rolland J. "Curly" Maynard, 84, a loving father and grandfather, went to his Father's Home on Feb. 12 from Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born March 24, 1926, in Colby, he was the son of George and Avis Gaswint Maynard. He had attended Great Bend High School. A resident of Hutchinson, he had previously lived in Great Bend and Mesa, Ariz. He had owned A&W Root Beer Drive-in and had worked for Holiday Rambler Travel Trailer as a travel coordinator. OAK LAWN, Ill. - Irene Clara (Schroeder) Carl, 94, died Feb. 14 at Manor Care at Oak Lawn West, Ill. She was born Oct. 3, 1916, at Barton County, the daughter of Henry J. and Clara Frances (Geil) Schroeder. She married Ralph E. "Pete" Carl on July 6, 1943, at Albert. He died Oct. 15, 1975. She worked for Burlington Overall Factory as a seamstress. A Great Bend resident since 1977, coming from Chanute, she moved to Oak Lawn in 2005.
Teenager has seizures after smoking potpourri

Genetics, brain function and other factors hold promise of helping researchers predict which teenagers will become binge drinkers and abuse alcohol. A study just out in the journal Nature suggests scientists can teach a computer to make such a prediction with close to 70 percent accuracy.
