Barton Community College has announced enrollment times for its summer 2011 outreach courses. The college's summer bulletin of classes lists all outreach courses and workshops. Bulletins are available at area libraries and high schools. Enrollment for outreach classes in Russell is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Russell High School. Courses include English Composition I (ITV), Introduction to Sociology (ITV), English Composition II and College Algebra. Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams, will show free movies this week, and will serve free popcorn.
Many people have a strong fear of snakes. However, some people get excited every time they encounter one of these misunderstood critters. One such person is herpetologist Joseph Collins of the Center for North American Herpetology. Collins has many stories about encountering snakes in the wild. He also has recently co-authored a revised edition of the "Amphibians, Reptiles, and Turtles of Kansas."

Wade Babcock is seeking election to the school board this coming Tuesday. Babcock a western Kansas native moved to Great Bend in 2001. He and his family came to Great Bend when he began employment with Central Kansas Orthopedic Group as a practicing Physician Assistant. Wade and his wife Lisa have three children Kaleb, Jacob, and Sophia. Kaleb and Jacob currently attend school at Jefferson Elementary. Esther Cromwell will celebrate her 85th birthday with a reception from 2:30 to 4 p.m. today at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington. Hosts for the evening will be her daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Darrell Zigler, Connie and John Gilzinger and Barbara and David Janway.
Louise Hejny of Gardner, will celebrate her 88th birthday with a card shower. Louise was born on April 5, 1923 in Olmitz. She has lived most of her life on a farm near Olmitz. She has two children, Norma and Richard Kraisinger of Otis and Donna and Philip Feist of Gardner; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Lauren Rebecca Marshall and Christopher Jordan Weems were united in marriage on Nov. 13 at the historic estate of John and Mable Ringling in Sarasota, Fla. in a ceremony officiated by the Reverend William Johnson. Lauren is the daughter of Dr. Roger and Laina Marshall, of Great Bend. Christopher is the son of Mr. Samuel and Deborah Weems, of Jackson, Miss.
