GREAT BEND - Almeda Regina (Kuhn) Stecklein, 84, of Great Bend and a former longtime Munjor resident, passed away Feb. 3, 2012 at Great Bend Health and Rehab Center.
GREAT BEND - Irene June (Curtis) Remmert, 84, died Feb. 6, 2012 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center.
The first of three groups of soldiers from the Kansas National Guard's 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, which has a subordinate unit in Great Bend, will be welcomed home from their year-long deployment to the Horn of Africa on Thursday Topeka.
Great Bend firefighters were dispatched to 812 Stone St. at 10:15 p.m. Friday. The first crew on the scene reported heavy fire and smoke from a window, Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said. "The bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down; however, the house had a large amount of belongings throughout the structure making it difficult to totally extinguish the fire." No one was hurt, but several dogs in the house died. Damage was estimated at $50,000 and at last report the cause of the fire had not been determined.
Barton Community College will offer a Certified Medication Aide update course to provide CMAs with continuing education and a review of medications and delivery styles, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 15-16 at the Lyons State Bank, 101 East Main St., Lyons.

Carol Warrick, Larned, proudly announced that he celebrated his 97th birthday on Christmas Day. ElderCare, Inc. also achieved a recent milestone, when Carol became Home Services client number 3,000. The friendly senior was visited at his home where he lives comfortably and independently. He was joined by Ivy, the protective companion dog. The retired Nebraska farmer also enjoys frequent visits from his daughter, Jan.
Everett L. Stricker will celebrate his 90th birthday on Feb. 13 with a card shower. He was born on Feb. 13, 1922, in Ringwood, Okla.
Is it April already? The first quarter of the year has really flown by at least for me. This week, I am going to give a few updates about programs that will be going on around Great Bend that you may be interested in.
"The Great Divorce," a play adapted from the C.S. Lewis novel, will show at 8 p.m. on April 11–12 in Culbertson Auditorium on the campus of Sterling College. The show will feature the final work of two seniors, director Kyle Davis of Hoisington, and costumes designer Megan Reed of Mulvane. The box office opens on show nights at 7 p.m. and doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

An invitation to visit with a group of GBHS seniors enrolled in the nutrition and wellness class prompted me to revisit some good resources in my files. After my hour long presentation was completed I thought the information would be perfect to share in my weekly column space. No doubt you are noticing that food prices are gradually creeping up higher and higher each time you visit the store. The challenge continues to be, "How can I feed my family healthy food choices for less?"
Benjamin Kelm, 17, of Shawnee, received his Boy Scout Eagle rank during the Court of Honor on March 22nd. He has been in scouting since the first grade and achieved his Eagle Rank in December 2013. Benjamin's project developed from seeing a need for two outside benches at his church. He organized and constructed two benches for his project.
League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold their monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday, at Montana Mike's in the north room. Lunch will be from the menu and can be from their "quick serve" menu.
The following well-balanced and nutritious Friendship Meals will be served for lunch at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Meals are served with milk; donations for coffee and tea are accepted.
The following meals will be served April 7 through April 11. The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.
