Michelle Jean Steinert, age 56, lost a three-year fight with cancer at 10:40 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2012, in her home surrounded by the pride and joy of her life – her five grown children. She was born July 22, 1955, in El Dorado, Kansas, the daughter of Darrell Bellew and Mary Pickett.
HOISINGTON - The Hoisington Summer Recreation Commission will hold its annual variety show at 2 p.m. on July 22 at Hoisington High School. Refreshments will be served at intermission. There will be musical numbers, trash can band and other entertainment.

Crime Stoppers of Barton County is seeking information about the theft of geothermal equipment from a work site in the 1400 block of SE 50 Road that occurred July 14 or 15. Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said items taken include geo phones, a data box, cables and a battery. Loss was $3,160. "If you have information about this crime or any other crime, please call 792-1300 or 888-305-1300. Remember we don't want your name, just your information."
First Southern Baptist Church, 3301 19th St., chose "Amazing Wonders Aviation" as the theme for this year's Vacation Bible School, starting Monday, July 23.
"Walking with Jesus through the Parables" is the theme of this year's Vacation Bible School at the Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Church, located one mile west of 10th and Patton Road.
The other day I saw a chart illustrating the growth of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in the federal budget. The chart and article were produced by www.bankruptingamerica.org and it showed these three items growing from 16 percent of the Federal budget in 1967 to a whopping 41 percent of the budget in 2011. I believe that there are two reasons for this.

Mary E. Henkle, 80, died Oct. 21 at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. Services are pending with Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend.
Mary Lea Wade, 85, died Oct. 21, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Aug. 14, 1929, in Prague, Okla., she was the daughter of Alvin and Pearl (Stiffler) Montgomery. On Oct. 14, 1951, she married Lee Wade in Great Bend. He died on April 9, 1988. A resident of Great Bend since 1946, coming from Prague, Okla., she was a secretary for Kopke Law Office and Haneke Financial Services.
RUSSELL - Gerald Dean Bender, 72, passed away on Oct. 19, at Russell Regional Hospital. Born Jan. 23, 1942, in Russell, he was the son of Herbert H. and Viola E. (Mai) Bender. He grew up and attended schools in the Milberger area. He was employed by the City of Russell in the refuse department for 20 years, retiring in 1999.
CLINTON, Iowa - Gerald V. Galusha, 91, of Clinton, Iowa, died Sunday Oct. 19, at his home. Gerald was born on Aug. 16, 1923, in Garden Plaines, Ill., the son of James and Louise (Gerhardt) Galusha. He graduated from Erie High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, with the 90th Infantry Division under General Patton. He was wounded on Jan. 16, 1945, at the Battle of the Bulge, when he received severe head injuries from mortar shell shrapnel.

After a night of patrolling, a Barton County Sheriff's Office deputy returned to headquarters Sunday morning and discovered the patrol car had been sideswiped somewhere in the county. The vehicle, a 2014 Dodge Charger, had damage and paint transfer from another vehicle on the passenger-side doors and rear quarter panel.
Two male inmates in separate pods at the Barton County Jail attempted to hang themselves using sheets this past weekend, Undersheriff Bruce Green confirmed Tuesday. In each instance, another inmate noticed what was happening and alerted a detention officer before serious injury occurred.
