BCC trustees to look at vehicle purchases, naming rights

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will consider 2013 vehicle purchases when it meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday in room F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. There will also be a report on the accreditation checkup by the Higher Learning Commission. Other action items include approval of personnel and naming rights for the Kirkman practice gym floor. Larry and Kathy Schugart have agreed to pay for the new floor and the administration recommends naming it the Schugart Court.

Santa sighting

Residents in the southeast part of Great Bend reported seeing Santa Claus in town Saturday, handing out bags of candy. Taking advantage of the nice weather, George Weber put on a Santa suit and hitched his mule to a wagon. "I've been doing this for several years," he said, adding the candy was furnished by his cousins, Rick and Randy Suchy. Weber said he'd given away 100 bags of candy, including one to Darien Montes, shown here with his mom. Darien will be 3 years old on Dec. 20.

HAYS - Donna J. Schmidt, 74, died Dec. 7 at Hays Medical Center. Born April 20, 1938, in Hutchinson, she was the daughter of Henry Oscar and Hertha Elsa (Reiswig) White. She grew up and attended high school in Hutchinson. On Dec. 20, 1959, she married Richard E. "Rich" Schmidt in Hutchinson. He died on Oct. 26, 1998. She and her husband owned and operated Al's Chickenette in Hays, from 1976 to 2010. She received a nursing degree at Fort Scott and worked at Central Kansas Hospital in Great Bend for a few years. She moved to Hays in 1976 ...

Doris "Arlene" Bigham 1923 - 2012

Doris "Arlene" Bigham, 89, formerly of Great Bend, died Dec. 1 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice-St. Francis in Wichita. She was born the daughter of Roy and Nellie (Stump) Van Cleave on March 18, 1923, in Pawnee County near Larned. In 1943, Arlene and Phillip Eugene Bigham were united in marriage in Denver, Colo. Together they celebrated 32 years of marriage. She was a loving mother and grandmother that touched many lives. All that knew Arlene loved her dearly.

The daughter of Michael Ross and Othilia Bertha (Bender) Prather, she was born June 10, 1955, in Great Bend. She attended the Countryside school, as well as the Laverne and Keyes, Okla., schools, graduating from Keyes High School with the Class of 1974.

Survey to begin on US-56 Highway in Rice County

Starting around Monday, April 20, and continuing for three weeks, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will have a field survey team surveying a section of US-56 Highway in Rice County. The survey area will include the section of US-56 highway 1,200 feet east and 1,200 feet west of the US-56 bridge over the overflow channel for the Little Arkansas River located 1.1 miles east of the US-56 highway intersection with K-46 highway. The purpose of the survey is to gather information necessary to create detailed designs for future highway improvements.

Mary M. Wondra 1922 -2015

ODIN – Mary M. Wondra, 92, died April 12, at Great Bend Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 12, 1922, in Odin, she was the daughter of Joseph V. and Frances M. (Tinkel) Jenisch. She graduated from Odin High School. On April 29, 1946, she married William Wondra in Odin. He died Nov. 13, 1996. A lifetime resident of the Odin and Claflin area, she was a homemaker.
