Driver injured after semi-trailer carrying hay bales rolls in Russell County
Larry Robert Bates, 60, from Rogers, Texas, was injured when his semi-trailer went off a Russell County road at 11:10 a.m. Friday. Zoo Society offers early view of cougar at annual meeting
The annual Zoo Society meeting will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo. President Penny Quinn will host a slide show presentation to update members on activities and answer questions. Barton County 4-H was well represented at the Kansas State Fair. In the State Fashion Revue, Julie Bitter was a contestant in the Buymanship division, received a purple rating and was considered for champion. Kenzie Unruh and Kyle Blakeslee were also in the buymanship fashion revue and received blue ratings. The 4-H Photography division is the largest at the state fair with nearly 2000 exhibits. She has two big sisters Alexandrea Eye who is 17 years old and Isabelle Eye who is 4 years old, and a big brother Gabriel Eye who is 6 years old.
Clara Bahr 100th
Clara Bahr will celebrate her 100th birthday on Oct. 4 with a family picnic hosted by her children and families. She was born Oct. 4, 1911 in Barton County. She married Leonard Bahr. He died April 12, 1993. A resident of rural Olmitz, she is a homemaker. Her children are Patricia and Ervin McConnell of Hoisington, Luella and Tom Call of Rolla, Mo., Jenelda and Leo Moore of Valdez Ala., Rita Bahr of Jones, Okla., Frances Dietz of Russell, and the late Donald Bahr.

Documentary sheds light on gray areas
It's not often people of varying beliefs are invited to weigh in on what they really think about religion and culture. But that's exactly what the Rev. Lenny Maxwell at First United Methodist Church hopes will happen Saturday night. The church will present a free screening of "Lord, Save Us From Your Followers," a documentary by Dan Merchant, featuring interviews with well-known people on all sides of the "culture wars."

Judy Mershon Huber Wolfenbarger 1935 - 2013
MINNESOTT BEACH, N.C. - Judy Mershon Huber Wolfenbarger, 77, of Minnesott Beach, N.C., passed away June 4. Born in Chicago, Ill., on Nov. 4, 1935, she was the daughter of Andrew B. and Dorothy Mershon Huber. Her family moved to Mt. Carroll, Ill., in 1942. An accomplished pianist, guitar player and percussionist for Mt. Carroll High School, music was an important part of her life. Her quick wit and love of ironic humor lasted throughout her lifetime.
