Georgia Bauer of Pawnee Rock will celebrate her 80th birthday on June 11 with a card shower. Georgia Folkerts Bauer was born on June 11, 1933, on the family farm north of Larned. She has five children: Terry Bauer, Mike Bauer and wife Susan, and Bret Bauer and wife Terri, all of Pawnee Rock; Mary and husband Kevin Holle of Herndon; and Laurie and husband Richard Josefiak of Rozel; and 15 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren with another expected in July.

Hoisington native graduates from Ivy League School

Dakota Meyers, Hoisington High Class of 2009, graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts in the field of Economics during the university's 312th commencement ceremony, which took place last week. During the daylong ceremony, degrees were conferred to graduates of Yale College and all of the university's graduate schools, except for Yale Law School. School summer menu

USD 428 Great Bend School Food Service will offer the summer lunch program at Eisenhower, Jefferson, Lincoln, Park and Riley Elementary schools. The program will run from June 3 through June 27 (Monday through Thursday). Breakfast is served at Park and Riley only. There is no charge for anyone age 1 through 18. Sites are open to all children regardless of where they attend school. Parents may eat with their children for $3.50 for lunch or $2 for breakfast. All food must be consumed on site.

Golden Belt Community Foundation accepting grant applications for July

The Golden Belt Community Foundation invites proposals for its upcoming competitive grant cycle. Applications now are being accepted from qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and public institutions, including schools, government entities, and clubs and civic/community organizations in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties. Funds are available primarily for the health and well-being of youth; however, limited funds are available in many other categories.

Blazers place second

The Barton Blazers took second place in the Shawnee Mission/Overland Park Premiere basketball tournament. The Blazers defeated the Reno County Elite, Beastmode, Bobcats, and CNBA. They lost in the championship game to Missouri Flight. The Blazers will be playing at home this coming weekend in the Great Bend MAYB tourney.
