Asphalt overlay on US-56 Highway in Barton County

Starting around Monday the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will begin an asphalt overlay project on US-56 Highway in Barton County, from the east city limits of Great Bend continuing east approximately 8 miles to the west city limits of Ellinwood.

Kansas Youth Hunters in the Kansas Governors One Shot Turkey Hunt

The Kansas Governor's One Shot Turkey Hunt announces Liza Ward of Great Bend has been chosen to be one of six Kansas youth to participate in the 29th annual Kansas Governor's One Shot Turkey Hunt. The event will be held April 16, 17 and 18, in El Dorado. Hunters from many states have committed to participate this year including Kansas Governor Sam Brownback.

Lenten Luncheon: Foundry Methodist

Foundry Methodist Church, 5401 Broadway Ave., will be the host site for the next Lenten Luncheon, a noon Wednesday, March 18. A meal is served at noon (not earlier) and the meeting ends at 1 p.m. A freewill offering is suggested to defray the expenses of the host congregation. Host pastors at Foundry Methodist are Kevin and Jana Baxter. The speaker will be Sister Andre Kravec, O.P., a Dominican Sister ministering in the Catholic churches in Claflin and Odin.

Joseph F. Bunk 1947 - 2015

WICHITA - Joseph F. Bunk, 67, passed away Feb. 28, 2015. He was born July 14, 1947, in Great Bend, to Maurice and Mary (Kaechele) Bunk of Hoisington. In 1965, Joe graduated from Hoisington High School. After serving his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, he attended Kansas State University and graduated with a master's degree in Business Administration and Accounting.

Michele Lynn Popp 1953 - 2015

HOISINGTON - Michele Lynn Popp, 61, of Sedalia, Mo., passed away March 11, 2015, at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia, Mo. Born Aug. 11, 1953, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Eugene A. and Bobett T. Lott Beran. On June 1, 1974, she was united in marriage to Larry D. Popp, in Odin. Her life centered around her family. She also enjoyed cooking and sewing.

Norman John Klepper 1919 - 2015

ELLINWOOD - Norman John Klepper, 95, died March 11, 2015, at Ellinwood District Hospital. He was born at his home in rural Ellinwood on June 23, 1919, to John and Mae (Arnsdorf) Klepper. Norman was a lifetime resident of Ellinwood, also living in Garfield for eight years. He attended Sts. Peter & Paul Grade School and was an Ellinwood High School graduate. He married Anna Musenberg on Nov. 6, 1946, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church. She died on July 4, 1972. He later married June Hammer on Nov. 27, 1981, at St. Joseph's Church. She died May 6, 2011. State seeks national designation for Ark River

TOPEKA – Following on the success of the Kansas River being named a national water trail by the National Park Service in July 2012, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism wants the same designation for a portion of the Arkansas River in Kansas, including near Great Bend.
