​Lightning hits rural home

Lightning struck a house Monday night at 237 SE 40 Road, following the cable TV line into the house. Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said firefighters were dispatched to the rural home at 10:59 p.m., but there was no fire.

“Weez” Vernon E. Duntz, Jr. 1957 - 2013

"Weez" Vernon E. Duntz, Jr., 56, died Oct. 28, 2013 at his residence in Raymond. He was born Sept. 12, 1957 in Fremont, Neb. the son of Vernon and Karen (Walters) Duntz, Sr. He was a lifetime Chase and Raymond community resident.

Ruby Daldeen (Fortner) Blazer 1937 - 2013

NATOMA - Ruby Daldeen (Fortner) Blazer, 76, died Oct. 28, at Redbud Village in Plainville. Born March 28, 1937 in Gossell, she was the daughter of James Kendall and Belva (Joiner) Fortner. She was a graduate of Kingman High School and attended Sterling College. On April 10, 1981 she married James Everett "Jim" Blazer in St. John. They made their home in Great Bend and later in 1999, they moved to Natoma. She was the owner and operator of the "Special Touch Flower Shop" in Great Bend.

GBHS Novice Debaters win in Varsity

At the Haven Invitational Varsity Debate Tournament on Oct. 26, two Great Bend High School novice debate teams competed and both finished with winning records against varsity debaters. There where 22 schools and 58 teams that competed at the tournament. Trae Black and Ashtin Heath finished with a 3-2 win loss record with 25 speaker points and tied with their teammates Aaron Miller and Makinna Dykes with the same record and speaker points. GBHS Debate coach Barbra Watson commented "I was proud of all of my first year debaters that were brave enough to compete at this huge varsity tournament ...

Obamacare Boomerangs on Democrats Up For Reelection

Not every bad thing that happens to us is bad, long term. I've learned it well; some of life's biggest blessings arrive unexpectedly, wrapped in the most unsightly dressings. It's as if the alchemy happens in the waiting. And so it may be for the GOP, as they now get to witness certain Democrats, who supported Obamacare, paying a hefty price for their misdeeds. (And who says there isn't a God?)
