ELLINWOOD - Hurricane Sandy has caused severe damage to nine communities in Haiti where Star of Hope has projects. Torrential rain fell for more than 24 hours resulting in flash flooding, landslides and rivers overflowing their banks. Reports of impassable roads, loss of crops and livestock are widespread throughout rural Haiti.

Shirley Lou Smith, 80, died Oct. 25, 2012 at her home in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 28, 1931 at Bunker Hill, the daughter of George A. and Margaret Ellen (Peck) Hanzlick.
The final visit to the Barton Gym for Coach Francis Flax was a memorable one. The Brown Mackie College men's basketball coach, wrapping up a 32-year career this season, made his final visit to a gym that he has visited probably about as many times as any other gym but his own over his career. In that final game Saturday afternoon the veteran coach left with a 97-93 win over the host Barton Community College Cougars.
Hoisington Kids Wrestling Club will host a home tournament on Dec. 13, at the Activity Center.

Great Bend Middle School Wrestlers traveled to Salina for a duel tournament on Saturday. "I'm very proud of our team. These guys sacrifice a lot just to participate in wrestling. The fact is this group gave up a Saturday to work their tails off and achieve something pretty special." commented Panthers Coach Norbert Muth. Ten teams attended the tournament. The teams were split into two pools and the winner of each pool would wrestle for the championship. Karl Lee Brack, 84, died Dec. 7, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Nov. 29, 1930, in Larned, he was the son of Sol M. and Neva M. (Toots) Brack. He was a 1948 graduate of Great Bend High School and received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Kansas State University in 1953. On Sept. 28, 1958, he married Loreta J. "Reta" Hill in Hoisington. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Mr. Brack began work at KCKT-TV as a sales representative until February 1956, when he started work for American State Bank and Bank IV, retiring in 1991 ...
