Certified Surgical Technologist at Clara Barton Hospital will be removing her surgical mask for a few days to attend the National Association of Surgical Technologist Conference May 23- 27 in Washington, D.C. The professional behind this mask is Amy Foltz, a graduate from Hutchinson Community College and Certified Surgical Technologist at Clara Barton Hospital for 12 years.
As a lifelong "Great Bender" and a child of the 1960s, artist Chet Cale was like most other locals from his generation.

HOISINGTON - Lillian R. Funk, 88, died April 25 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Sept. 29, 1923, in Russell County, she was the daughter of J. Peter and Margaret (Deines) Boxberger. On Nov. 22, 1942, she married Raymond Funk in Milberger. He died on Sept. 12, 2000. A lifetime Russell and Barton County resident, she was a cook at Homestead Villa and then for Clara Barton Hospital, both in Hoisington, until her retirement. She enjoyed cooking, baking and decorating cakes, and gardening – especially caring for her plants and flowers.
ST. JOHN - Jean (Cadman) Astle, 87, died Apr. 25 at South Wind Hospice, Pratt. She was born June 3, 1924, at Moscow, Kan., the daughter of James H. and Ila F. (Lindsey) Cadman. She moved to St. John in 1964 where she was a homemaker and former aide for St. John Hospital.
The Great Bend City Council will hold a special meeting at 8 a.m. Friday in the city office building, 1209 Williams, to consider a request to shoot off fireworks in conjunction with the Jack Kilby Day celebration Saturday.

At 9:49 a.m. Tuesday, Great Bend Fire Department was dispatched to 5817 16th St. Terrace for a report of an oven on fire. According to a report released Wednesday, crews found light smoke coming from Apartment 42. Inside, they found a smoldering fire along the baseboard of the wall behind the stove and extinguished the remaining fire.

GREAT BEND - James F. Adams, 86, went to his heavenly home Tuesday afternoon Aug. 19, 2014.
The Great Bend High School guidance counselors will host a freshman parent meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the GBHS auditorium. Counselors will review their responsibilities as counselors and also discuss attendance, grades, communication, office procedures, graduation requirements, qualified admissions/Kansas scholars requirements for getting into college and expectations for freshmen. This meeting will be about 30-45 minutes in length, depending on questions.
This month, Volunteers In Action/RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) recognizes their over 450 members who serve in this community every day to the tune of 44,000 hours last year an almost 22,000 hours this year so far.

We have been at war with Iraq for 24 years, starting with Operations Desert Shield and Storm in 1990. Shortly after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait that year, the propaganda machine began agitating for a US attack on Iraq. We all remember the appearance before Congress of a young Kuwaiti woman claiming that the Iraqis were ripping Kuwaiti babies from incubators. The woman turned out to be the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the US and the story was false, but it was enough to turn US opposition in favor of an attack.

RUSSELL COUNTY – Teresa Magna, 51, Spring Valley, Calif., has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Wichita. She is charged with one count of distributing methamphetamine and one count of interstate travel in furtherance of drug trafficking. The crime is alleged to have occurred Aug. 6 in Russell County.
