Marsh Musings

Our marsh got a sip of water this past week. There was enough rain to put some sheet water in a few spots in the Bottoms and the magic began! Overnight a group of pelicans appeared. Ducks, geese and cranes are suddenly present in significant numbers.

First Kansas announces promotions

Paul Snapp, president and CEO of First Kansas Bank, announced the promotions of Patty Strube to assistant vice president and Angela Campbell to vice president and facility manager of the First Kansas Bank location in Great Bend. "Patty Strube is a model for our Bank Team," Snapp said. Strube's role in customer service will continue to expand. She has been with the Bank for nine years in a variety of positions.

Wilbur Dean Dirks 1928-2012

LARNED - Wilbur Dean Dirks, 84, passed away Nov. 22 at his home in Larned. He was born March 7, 1928 in Pawnee County, the son of John Jacob Dirks and Anna Marie George. He was a resident of both Larned and Wichita. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Larned and attended Evangel Assembly of God, Wichita.

BROWNELL - Dennis Dale Michel, 64, died Nov. 22, 2012 at Ness County Hospital, Ness City, to join God's Thanksgiving feast, after his long three year battle with peritoneal mesothelioma cancer. He was born June 3, 1948 in Great Bend, the son of Walter and Fern (Keatley) Michel. Dennis was a lifetime resident of Ness County and was proud of his heritage, coming from an 1867 century farm in Ness County.

Vaccine Controversy Shows Why We Need Markets, Not Mandates

If I were still a practicing ob-gyn and one of my patients said she was not going to vaccinate her child, I might try to persuade her to change her mind. But, if I were unsuccessful, I would respect her decision. I certainly would not lobby the government to pass a law mandating that children be vaccinated even if the children's parents object. Sadly, the recent panic over the outbreak of measles has led many Americans, including some self-styled libertarians, to call for giving government new powers to force all children to be vaccinated.
