The Great Bend Recreation Commission is taking reservations for a Christmas Entertaining Meals luncheon program on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. Program Coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick invites the public to "get into the Christmas spirit with a wonderful meal and the sounds from the Great Bend Middle School Women In Harmony group. The meal will begin at noon and entertainment will be held from 12:15-12:45 p.m., followed by time to visit with your friends before you head back to work at 1 p.m."

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will discuss college vehicle replacement bids at its December study session, set for 4 p.m. Thursday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. Other items on the agenda include military certificates, the BCC financial statement, EduKan budget, plans to meet with legislators in the BCC service area, iPad training and the 2012 Association of Community College Trustees' Legislative Summit, Feb. 13-16 in Washington, D.C. Trustees will also discuss changing the date of the December business meeting from Dec. 15 to Dec. 13.
ELLINWOOD - Doris A. Starkey, 92, died Nov. 16 at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Oct. 20, 1919 in Burlington, she was the daughter of William L. Graybeal and Mary Ann Finney Graybeal. An Ellinwood resident for nearly 50 years, formerly of Houston, Texas and Burlington, she was a bank teller and secretary.
Delores Ann Zachary, 55, longtime Great Bend resident, died on Nov. 28 at her home in Great Bend. Born on Jan. 6, 1956 at Ellinwood, she was the daughter of Leslie and Margaret (Dueser) Music. She graduated from Barton County Community College in Great Bend. She worked at the Safeway grocery store in Great Bend, and at the time of her death worked was a waitress at the Pizza Hut on north Main Street in Great Bend, where she had been employed for many years.

LOVELAND, Colo. - Robert Jude Hammer, 71, passed away on Nov. 20 at his home in Loveland, Colo. Born on Oct. 23, 1940 in Great Bend, he was the son of Carl and June (Keenan) Hammer. He grew up on a farm west of Ellinwood. In 1958, he graduated from Ellinwood High School. He attended Fort Hays State University where he received a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts in Political Science. He then attended the University of Kansas where he received his Judicial Degree. Bill Johnson McKown, 58, died March 19, at his home in Great Bend. Born Nov. 2, 1955 in Oklahoma City, Okla., he was the son of George Monnet and Martha Lu (Johnson) McKown. Mr. McKown was a Great Bend resident since 1965, coming from Wichita.
Martha Lu (Johnson) McKown, 84, died March 20 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born April 16,1929, in Borger, Texas, she was the daughter of Everett T. "Bill" and Pearl (Baggerly) Johnson. On Jan. 18, 1953, she married George Monnet McKown in Cherokee, Okla. He died on March 11, 2008. A Great Bend resident since 1965, she was the vice president and chief financial officer for DaMac Drilling.
YORK, Neb. - David E. Staehr, 73, of York, Neb. and Overland Park, passed away on April 8, in York, Neb. He was born July 14, 1940, to Alfred and Grace (Dey) Staehr of Waco, Neb. David was a 1958 graduate of York High School where he participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was recruited to attend Kearney State College in Kearney, Neb., where he competed as a stand out athlete and earned varsity letters in football and basketball with the Lopers. Donald "Skip" Bowsher Jr., 90, died March 29 at Salina Regional Health Center. Born Nov. 7, 1923 in Sandusky, Ohio, he was the son of Donald Allison and Frances (Corbeille) Bowsher. On April 5, 1953, he married Twila Ulrich in Quinter. A longtime Great Bend resident he was he was co-owner and operator for Cheyenne Hardware and owner and operator of Sentry Hardware in the Westgate Shopping Center, retiring in 1985. His Sentry Hardware store was the first in the state of Kansas.
The dining hall at Camp Aldrich caught fire early this morning. Luckily, the facility was not in use and no one was injured. It is unknown if any of the facility will be salvageable, and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission Board will renew GBRC liability insurance and vote on health insurance when it meets at 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. Information items on the agenda include training, a coaches' guide for youth sports and plans for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball and softball tournament coming to Great Bend.

Barton Community College will be closed on Friday, April 18 and Monday, April 21. Barton's Center for Adult Education and Shafer Art Gallery will also be closed. The college's regular class schedule and office hours will resume Tuesday, April 22.
