ROZEL - Alice "Pauline" Myers, 91, left this world on Oct. 18 at her home in Rozel. Born Jan. 16, 1921, at Bristow, Okla., she was the daughter of Samuel Alexander and Maude Gertrude Reinhart Warren; she was one of 13 children. On May 7, 1944, she married Cletice N. Myers at Vinita, Okla. He died on Jan. 27, 1979. She was a resident of Rozel since 1973, moving from Great Bend, where they raised their family. The governing body of the City of Claflin met in regular session, Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in the city building. Present were: Mayor Michael Urban, Councilpersons Kirk Schneweis, Kelly Nixon, Casey Hubbard, Dan Michaelis and Leon Oberle. Also present were: City Attorney Bob Suelter, City Clerk Patricia Schmidt, Richard Hayes, Alvita Cates and Gerry Schartz.
The following students showed their service and responsibility to the community by giving up their Saturday to deliver phone books around the community. For this reason, they were honored as the Cardinal Core at Hoisington High.
ELLINWOOD - At the regular Ellinwood District Hospital board meeting, the board discussed the retirement party for Joyce Schulte on Oct. 19 and the 60th anniversary of the hospital.

Gloria Hernandez's name is becoming synonymous with vegetarian cooking in Great Bend. After teaching classes at the Parent Resource Center and also the Great Bend Recreation Center she now is offering a one-day vegan vegetarian cooking class from 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1 mile west of 10th and Patton in Great Bend.
The Central Kansas Community Choir, which is sponsored by Barton Community College will begin rehearsals next week for its 2015 concert, "God and Country."
Not often does the Golden Belt Community Concert Association feature a steel drum and marimba percussionist in concert. In fact, this month's performer is the first. Paul McDermand, Caribbean/pop performer on steel drum and marimba, will present the association's first concert of 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone.
On Monday, the Barton County Sheriff's Office received calls from individuals in rural Great Bend and rural Pawnee Rock, both reporting attempted fraud via telephone scams.

LA CROSSE - Esther Marie Urban, 92, died Jan. 10, 2015, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse.
ELLINWOOD - Eleanor Catherine (Hoffman) Hines, 92, died on Jan. 10, at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Nov. 18, 1922, she was the daughter of Henry J. Hoffman and Teresa (Krier) Hoffman. In 1940, she graduated from Great Bend High School. On Jan. 21, 1941, she married Leo M. Hines in Great Bend. He preceded her in death on June 30, 1988. She was the Business Manager for the couple's plumbing business until their retirement in 1985.
HOLYROOD - Grace Anna Mehl, 96, passed away Jan. 9, in Wilson. Born Oct. 14, 1918, in Claflin, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Lubinus) Soeken. On June 1, 1941, she married Harvey W. Mehl in Claflin. He preceded her in death in 2001. A lifetime resident of the Claflin, Holyrood, and Lorraine areas, she was a homemaker, farm wife, and nurse's aide at Ellsworth Hospital.
OLATHE - Rosaline M. Staab, 70, passed away Jan 10th. Born Jan. 15, 1944, in Hays, she was the daughter of to Alois and Domitilla (Befort) Pfannenstiel. She was 1962 graduate of Marian High School. On Oct. 5, 1963, she married Dennis C. Staab. They resided in Great Bend until 1999 when they relocated to Olathe. She was employed by Fuller Brush Company in Great Bend for 22 years and Olathe School District Food Production for the past 12 years.
DODGE CITY - Lori Ann Ostrander, 40, died Jan. 12, 2015, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City. She was born on Nov. 19, 1974 at Larned, the daughter of Ronald Eugene and Judy Marie (Fuhrman) Ostrander.
Duane Alvin Potter, 94, died Jan. 10, 2015, at Hackensack, Minn. He was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Hugo, Colo., the son of Joseph Clinton and Elsa Patricia (Richardson) Potter. He grew up on a dairy farm and graduated from Hugo High School. He married Rosemary Weber on Nov. 18, 1943. After 69 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on Feb. 6, 2013.
