FLORISSANT, Colo. - James E. "Jim" Johnson, 60, died Jan. 2 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. He was born June 6, 1950, at Alva, Okla., the son of Harold E. and Elaine (Lane) Johnson. A Florissant, Colo., resident for 30 years, coming from Cave Junction, Ore., he owned a Jim Johnson's Services.

ELLINWOOD - Maurice Francis Thul, 87, died Jan. 1 at his home in Ellinwood. Born April 16, 1923, in Ellinwood, he was the son of John and Ida Dorothea Mayer Thul. Great Bend Police Robert Sweeney was driving west on 10th St. at 12:41 p.m. Thursday and struck a vehicle driven by Todd Jones, which was also westbound but stuck in traffic. Steven Wilkinson and Lindsey and step-father James Creamer announce the birth of their son Zayne Slater Creamer on Sept. 13 in Great Bend. He weighed 8 lbs and was 19 1/2 in. long. He has three big sisters, Bailey Nicole Creamer, 10 years old; Jamison Riley Creamer, 3 1/2 years old; and Brinley Taylor Creamer, 2 years old.

Kansas CRP meetings for landowners prior to signup hosted by PF
Pheasants Forever is hosting fifty-one informational meetings across Kansas for landowners and agricultural producers in advance of the USDA Farm Service Agency's Conservation Reserve Program general sign-up that runs May 20 through June 14. Led by Pheasants Forever Farm Bill Wildlife Biologists, landowners can learn how to increase their farm or ranch income while creating wildlife habitat in the process.

The following meals will be served May 13 through May 17. The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms out there! The month of May has arrived and that means a frenzy of activity for families who are celebrating Mother's day today and graduations now or in the weeks ahead. I am truly blessed to have my mother-in-law, daughter, and granddaughters close by. It is a joy to spend time together at a moment's notice. Hopefully your weekend plans include some good family time with plenty of hugs.

MILC, SURE, and NAP will restart on May 8
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator Juan M. Garcia announced today that farm payments, which had been temporarily suspended due to sequestration, are scheduled to resume today, May 8th. This includes payments for the 2011 Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments Program (SURE), the Noninsured Crop Assistance Program (NAP) and the Milk Income Loss Contract Program (MILC).

This is finals week at Barton and many of the other colleges around the state. For instructors it's time to evaluate what students learned over the last semester. For students it's time for that one last push to maintain or raise their grades. While faculty see testing as a method to evaluate learning and adjust accordingly, students often see testing as a way to be tortured. Students focus on the grade while faculty focus on ...
