Mr. and Mrs. Joe Boley will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary this Sunday. They were married on Dec. 26, 1955, in Wichita and moved to Great Bend in 1958 after living in Dorrance for three years. The two have been involved with music since their childhood and continue with numerous music activities in the Great Bend community. They have three daughters, Maggie McKain, Mary McMahan and JoAnn Ishmael; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Jim and Millie Meroney of Great Bend celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 13 with a cake reception with family and friends. The couple celebrated early since they plan to celebrate their actual anniversary in Las Vegas.
Members of the Delta Tau Soroity gathered on Dec. 14 for a time of Christmas celebration. They toured the festive homes of some of the club members and enjoyed appetizers and a dessert at the homes. The evening also involved the pledge ceremony of the new members of Delta Tau. In a candle lit ceremony, Stephanie Joiner of Great Bend and Rachel Sieker of Ellinwood officially became sisters of Delta Tau. It was a fun and joyous evening, and a warm welcome to the new members of Delta Tau.

Verizon Wireless announced today that it has donated $2,000 to Family Crisis Center, based in Great Bend, as part of the company's national HopeLine program, which is dedicated to assisting communities, local shelters and agencies in ending domestic violence. Family Crisis Center is one of 16 domestic violence prevention organizations in Kansas that will be receiving funds to support local education programs and shelter operations.

MANHATTAN – Kansas State University joins four other land-grant universities in sharing a three year, $1.9 million grant to study pest control methods, treatments and best management practices in wheat. The USDA's Risk Avoidance and Mitigation Program (RAMP) awarded the grant, which provides resources that allow scientists from the five institutions to complete their work.

LARNED - Anna Belle Owens, 73, died Dec. 23 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born May 17, 1937, in Shattuck, Okla. A resident of Larned since 1970, formerly of Woodward, Okla., she was a retired Food Service Supervisor 1 at the Larned State Hospital.

LAWRENCE - Surrounded by her four children at her home, Norma Lea Curry Shafer-Yancey, 84, peacefully passed away on May 4th. Born on Christmas Day in 1928, to Leslie and Glenda Curry in Burlington, Wash., Norma Lea Curry and her family moved to Great Bend, before her second birthday. Shortly after her graduation from high school, Norma met Ted Shafer at a picnic dance. They were married in 1948, and had four children. Shafer's position ...
LAWRENCE - Sylvia M. Wagner, 86, died on May 2, at Brandon Woods in Lawrence. Born Feb. 24, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of John and Marie (Wollert) Schmidt. On Nov. 17, 1946, she married Duane Wagner in Ellinwood. He preceded her in death on Aug. 13, 1991. She was a housewife and bank teller. She was an avid reader and enjoyed needlepoint.
