McPHERSON - The Great Bend High School girls' tennis team accomplished something that head coach Shannon Schartz hasn't seen in his 36 years.
CLAFLIN - The Canton-Galva High School football team held an 8-0 lead after the first quarter, but Central Plains took the lead before halftime and never turned back in Eight-Man action on Friday night.

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood USD 355 school district is up 22 students in the district over the headcount from last year. That is almost a six percent increase.
ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood Knights of Columbus will have a pancake and sausage breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish Center, 110 W. 2nd on Sunday, Oct. 7. Suggested donations are: 10 and older - $7, ages 6-9 is $3, and under 6 free. Proceeds will benefit people with intellectual disabilities. Sausage will also be for sale.
The Great Bend High School debate squad traveled seven two-person teams to two different tournaments on Sept. 22 and won six medals and a sweepstakes trophy.

Among the agenda items facing the Great Bend City Council when it meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office will be replacing resigned Second Ward council member Marty Keenan and selecting an architect for the Great Bend Convention Center project. Other topics will include a Community Improvement District for Southerlands, a city-wide clean-up, a neighborhood revitalization program, sidewalk improvements and a street resurfacing project.
At their January meeting, 15 members of Great Bend Garden Club received a wealth of information about the work of a small group of people working hard for the betterment of Great Bend. Garden Club member Toni Rice is also a member of the Great Bend Tree Board and during her recent program Toni enthusiastically told the history of the Tree Board and of Great Bend's status as a Tree City USA.
HAYS - "The Waters of Kansas - Cheyenne Bottoms," the first film in a series of short documentaries on water in Kansas by the Kansas Natural Resource Council, will be screened at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, 10 miles northeast of Great Bend on K-156.
ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood Knights of Columbus will have a soup sampler from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, at the St. Joseph Parish Center, 110 W. 2nd St. Several varieties of soup will be available to sample. Meal includes dessert and drink.
Two adult males under age 21 were arrested Thursday night after a police pursuit in the city of Great Bend.
