From new bathrooms to shiny, automatic sliding doors, Barton Community College's Student Union has received multiple major renovations over the past several months and the public is invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony and enjoy refreshments at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2 in the Student Union.

Larned Nazarene Church concert features Jill Christensen Smith

LARNED - At the Larned Church of the Nazarene, a month with five Sundays means it's time for a musical celebration. On this fifth Sunday in July, the church will feature the musical talents of Jill Christensen Smith singing songs of encouragement and worship. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy this free event at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 29. The church is located at 1024 Broadway, the corner of Broadway and East 11th St.

Operation Overoard mission

The children that attended Operation Overboard Vacation Bible School are shown here with items that were donated to the Golden Belt Humane Society as their mission for the week. They raised over $110 and collected 71 items. Throughout the week children enjoyed underwater adventures with Bible stories, magical science experiments, fun recreation games, creative crafts, yummy snacks and uplifting worship music with lots of dancing. They even got the chance to meet Ocho, the entertaining and witty octopus. 'Cool' technology gift helps special needs students

An idea that was born at Sunflower Diversified Services has resulted in new technology for children with special needs in USD 428. The non-profit agency's Foundation donated two iPads to the school district and the project is exceeding expectations, organizers said.

Eston Piland 1928 - 2012

MACKSVILLE - Eston Piland, 83, died July 25 at Sterling House in Great Bend. Born Aug. 20, 1928 in Macksville, he was the son of Russell H. and Alta M. (Dykes) Piland. A resident of Great Bend for eleven years, he lived most of his life in Macksville where he was a farmer and stockman and a graduate of Macksville High School. On April 26, 1950, he married Patty R. (Standish) in Hutchinson. She survives of the home.

Abby Louise Trapp Prescott 1989 - 2012

LARNED – Abby Louise Trapp Prescott, 22, died July 25 at Larned. She was born Nov. 6, 1989, at Great Bend, the daughter of Louis and Loretta Torrez Trapp. A 2008 graduate of Larned High School, she was the Outstanding Girl Athlete & Football Homecoming Queen. A lifetime area resident, she was most recently employed by USD 495 as a paraprofessional until her health prevented her from working.

Helen Marie Steincamp, 84, died Jan. 10, 2015, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. Born Oct. 12, 1930, at Redwing, she was the daughter of Joseph R. and Anna Marie (Proksch) Dietz. She was a 1948 graduate of Hoisington High School.

Wow! Writing 2015 on correspondence is taking some getting used to. It does not seem like it has been that many years since we celebrated the arrival of a new century. Kansas falling behind in feeding its own, study says

The good news is, Kansas consumers spend $7.2 billion on food each year. The bad news is, $6.5 billion of it comes from beyond the state's borders, obesity is on the rise, 56 percent of Kansas farmers require secondary income and only eight percent of Kansans have healthy diets, according to a 2010 survey by the Kansas Health Institute.
