Lawrence "Larry" Frenzl 1928 - 2012

HAYS - Lawrence "Larry" Frenzl, 84, died Aug. 8 at his home. Born May 10, 1928, in Odin, he was the son of Hugo and Matilda (Hoffner) Frenzl. On Aug. 29, 1952, he married Edna Kolste in Bentonville, Ark. He attended Odin Catholic School and worked as a superintendant with Reece Construction Co. in Scandia from 1949 through 1984, with two years leave to serve in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952. He also worked at McClaren Ford, Hays Pathology Lab, and Paul MacDonald Chevrolet before retiring in 1992.

Vivian M. Chalfant 1936 - 2012

Vivian M. Chalfant, 75, died Aug. 8 at her home in Great Bend. Born Nov. 21, 1936, in Annes, she was the daughter of Johnny and Mildred (Thompson) True. On April 5, 1958, she married Don Chalfant in Hutchinson. A resident of Great Bend for 48 years, coming from Hays, she was a retired secretary.

Gas prices lower than state average

Average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 5.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.50 over the weekend. This compares with the national average that has increased 9.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.60, according to gasoline price website KansasGasPrices.com.

​Seventh-day Adventist School taking frozen berry orders

The Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School is placing the spring order for frozen fruit from the Bithell Farms in Oregon. Place orders by Feb. 25 and the fruit will arrive in late March or early April. Available are Marion blackberries, red raspberries, boysenberries, blueberries, strawberries which are sliced and sugared, strawberries whole without sugar, loganberries, red pie cherries, dark sweet cherries, peaches, apricots, apples and red rhubarb. Also available are freezer jam and purees.

Wrestling results for Hoisington High School for C.K.L. tournament

The Hoisington Wrestling team came as close as a team can come in not winning a team championship at the Central Kansas League tournament hosted by Hoisington this past Saturday. The team lost by just a mere 1/2 point to Smoky Valley High School. Making it even tougher on the Cardinals was that they had the fire power to have won the tournament, if they had been able to be at full strength. Former GBHS wrestler qualifies for NJCAA Wrestling Nationals

Former Great Bend High School wrestler Zachary Schridde qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Wrestling Nationals in the 133-pound weight class. Schridde placed fourth for the Pratt Beavers on Feb. 14, at the West Central District Regionals hosted by Colby Community College. Eight colleges participated including colleges from Oklahoma and Arkansas. Pratt Community College Beavers qualified a total of seven of their nine wrestlers for the National Tournament on Feb. 27-28, held in Des Moines, Iowa. The Pratt Beavers are coached by Ken Kepley.

Cougars take game on road; sweep Allen to move to 6-0

Lyle J. Lang 1942 - 2015

Lyle J. Lang, 73, died Feb. 15, at his home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 15, 1942, in Great Bend, he was the son of Frank and Gertrude (Eckert) Lang. On Oct. 24, 1966, he married Nancy Weber in Great Bend. They later divorced. A lifetime area resident, he was a truck driver for Meadow Gold Dairy, Santa Fe Trucking and Kansas Brick and Tile.
