John Detmer will celebrate his 80th birthday on Feb. 21 with a card shower. Born on Feb. 21, 1932 in the Willowdale area, he is a retired farmer and past owner of EQ Muffler. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. On Sept. 5, 1964 he married Helen Debes. He has four children and three grandchildren, Angela and David Maneth and their daughter Mary of Wichita, Connie and Mark Wagner of Danville, Ind., Cheryl and Wayne Kohl and their children, Jessica and John, of Greeley, Colo., and Al Detmer of Greeley, Colo.

Reymundo Martinez, 27, passed away on Oct. 11, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born on Dec. 29, 1986, in Garden City, he was the son of Martin Martinez and Lupe (Rubio) Martinez. He moved to Great Bend, at an early age and worked construction with his godfather, Arturo Escamilla.

According to Forbes magazine, at least 5,000 Americans contacted healthcare providers fearful they had contracted Ebola after the media reported that someone with Ebola had entered the United States. All 5,000 cases turned out to be false alarms. In fact, despite all the hype about Ebola generated by the media and government officials, as of this writing there has only been one preliminarily identified case of someone contracting Ebola within the United States.

Born Jan. 13, 1964, in Ransom, she was the daughter of Donald and Ruby (Armer) Popp. She attended elementary school at Pawnee Rock, and in 1982, graduated from Hoisington High School. After graduation she attended Barton Community College where she received her associate's degree. On April 27, 1985, she married JP Conrad in Hoisington.
