MARSH MUSINGS

Times are tough and exuberant in the marsh these days. For the fish and crustaceans that require water-- it is a critical time and many will perish. There is essentially no water in 85-90% of the Cheyenne Bottoms. Huge numbers of birds have moved on north-- either due to their migration instincts, or by the necessity to find food. For the shore birds, gulls, herons, Ibis, avocets and black-necked stilts and some of the ducks-- it is a feast of gigantic proportions.

GREAT BEND – Doreen Viola Boor, 66, died May 31, 2012, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 11, 1945, at Quinter, the daughter of Titus and Mary Matilda (Herzog) Kuntz. She married Lawrence "Larry" Boor May 5, 1966, at Great Bend. A bookkeeper for Johnson Electric and Alfalfa Pellets and having worked for Ellinwood Packing for 23 years, she was a Great Bend resident since 1963, coming from Grainfield.

Eleanor C. Hines

ELLINWOOD - Eleanor Catherine (Hoffman) Hines, 92, died on Jan. 10, at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Nov. 18, 1922, she was the daughter of Henry J. Hoffman and Teresa (Krier) Hoffman. In 1940, she graduated from Great Bend High School. On Jan. 21, 1941, she married Leo M. Hines in Great Bend. He preceded her in death on June 30, 1988. She was the Business Manager for the couple's plumbing business until their retirement in 1985.

HOLYROOD - Grace Anna Mehl, 96, passed away Jan. 9, in Wilson. Born Oct. 14, 1918, in Claflin, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Lubinus) Soeken. On June 1, 1941, she married Harvey W. Mehl in Claflin. He preceded her in death in 2001. A lifetime resident of the Claflin, Holyrood, and Lorraine areas, she was a homemaker, farm wife, and nurse's aide at Ellsworth Hospital.

County to observe Martin Luther King Day

Barton County Office Buildings will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, for Martin Luther King Day. The Records Division of the Sheriff's Office and the Health Department will also be closed. The Landfill will only be open from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. that day. Emergency services will be in normal operation.
