TOPEKA –Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack Wednesday announced grants for more than 900 agricultural producers and rural small businesses across the country to implement renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in their operations, including two area farmers. Vilsack made the announcement as part of President Obama's rural economic bus tour in the Midwest where today he highlighted efforts underway to reduce our country's dependence on foreign oil, which will increase the economic competitiveness of rural America and promote job creation.

The Elks Lodge #1127 of Great Bend, had a project to help the Great Bend Elementary schools Art Department. Project chairmen were Bobbie King and Denise King. Elk's members were asked to bring art supplies. A total of $600 was raised for the schools.

The motocross community will convene in central Kansas on Sept. 20-21 for the 2nd Annual Hahn Brothers Supercross Shootout. Hosted by nationally recognized and professional motocross racers Wil and Tommy Hahn, the shootout provides racing opportunities for pro and amateur racers, and an electric atmosphere for spectators and racers, the Hahns said.
The First Church of the Nazarene's children's ministries will hold a car wash from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at the Great Bend Appliance and Furniture Store parking lot, 2301 10th St. Lunch of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs will also be available.

MANHATTAN - There have been a number of videos interviewing people concerning their knowledge of historical and political information. This method of interviewing started with Jay Leno. It was then picked up by Sean Hannity, and later by several others. The results are both interesting and concerning.
The International Spy Academy is a Vacation Bible School where kids get to be special agents for God, according to sponsors at Community Christian Church in Great Bend. This Vacation Bible School starts Sunday and will be offered from 6:30 to 9 p.m. July 20-24 at the church, located at 253 NE 30 Road, just east of Barton Community College. It is intended for children who have completed kindergarten, through middle school.
"BARTON DYNASTY: Hunting for Bucks" is the theme for the 36th Annual Barton Foundation Big Benefit Auction, which this year's honorary co-chairs, Toby and Kristy Hogan, find rather fitting as the owners of the hunting service, "Central Kansas Whitetails." Only the "bucks" being hunted in this case are green, have presidents' faces on them and they help local students pay tuition at Barton Community College.

An Otis woman was injured Tuesday evening on a Barton County road, 4 miles north and 3 miles west of Galatia.
The Kansas Department of Commerce announced this week that 25 nonprofit organizations, including the Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation, will share $4.13 million in tax credits under the Kansas Community Service Tax Credit Program. Since 1994, CSP has helped nonprofit organizations undertake major capital fund-raising drives for various projects.
An attempted fraud was reported to the Barton County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday. Someone called a Barton County resident saying her grandson was in trouble in New Mexico and needed help. The woman hung up before finding out what kind of "help" was wanted, and instead called her grandson, who said he was fine.
