MATC graduates

Manhattan Area Technical College held its fall commencement exercises on Dec. 9 at McCain Auditorium in Manhattan. Brent McKeeman, Manhattan Technical College Alumni, delivered the commencement address to over 70 graduates in nine programs of study. MATC awarded associate of applied science degrees, and 24 graduates received technical certificates.

Hayden 60th

Mr. and Mrs. Leo L. Hayden celebrated their 60th anniversary on Dec. 22. Leo and Bertie Lou (Siefkes) Hayden were married Dec. 22, 1951 at Peace United Church of Christ, Hudson. The couple's children are Connie Sue and husband James of Wichita and the late Denise Lee. They have a granddaughter, Megan, of Wichita.

Saint Francis offering free training course for individuals interested in becoming foster parents, b

Saint Francis Community Services (a provider of foster care, adoption, and family preservation services) will offer a free, 10 week course, Partnering for Safety and Permanence - Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (PS-MAPP), for individuals interested in becoming foster parents. The course begins Jan. 5 and will be held every Thursday for 10 weeks from 6 to 9 p.m. The training will be held at Saint Francis Community Services, 1508 Main Street, Great Bend.

On Monday, the Barton County Sheriff's Office received calls from individuals in rural Great Bend and rural Pawnee Rock, both reporting attempted fraud via telephone scams.

Eleanor C. Hines

ELLINWOOD - Eleanor Catherine (Hoffman) Hines, 92, died on Jan. 10, at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Nov. 18, 1922, she was the daughter of Henry J. Hoffman and Teresa (Krier) Hoffman. In 1940, she graduated from Great Bend High School. On Jan. 21, 1941, she married Leo M. Hines in Great Bend. He preceded her in death on June 30, 1988. She was the Business Manager for the couple's plumbing business until their retirement in 1985.

Grace Anna Mehl 1918 - 2015

HOLYROOD - Grace Anna Mehl, 96, passed away Jan. 9, in Wilson. Born Oct. 14, 1918, in Claflin, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Lubinus) Soeken. On June 1, 1941, she married Harvey W. Mehl in Claflin. He preceded her in death in 2001. A lifetime resident of the Claflin, Holyrood, and Lorraine areas, she was a homemaker, farm wife, and nurse's aide at Ellsworth Hospital.

OLATHE - Rosaline M. Staab, 70, passed away Jan 10th. Born Jan. 15, 1944, in Hays, she was the daughter of to Alois and Domitilla (Befort) Pfannenstiel. She was 1962 graduate of Marian High School. On Oct. 5, 1963, she married Dennis C. Staab. They resided in Great Bend until 1999 when they relocated to Olathe. She was employed by Fuller Brush Company in Great Bend for 22 years and Olathe School District Food Production for the past 12 years.

Duane Alvin Potter 1920 - 2015

Duane Alvin Potter, 94, died Jan. 10, 2015, at Hackensack, Minn. He was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Hugo, Colo., the son of Joseph Clinton and Elsa Patricia (Richardson) Potter. He grew up on a dairy farm and graduated from Hugo High School. He married Rosemary Weber on Nov. 18, 1943. After 69 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on Feb. 6, 2013. County to observe Martin Luther King Day

Barton County Office Buildings will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, for Martin Luther King Day. The Records Division of the Sheriff's Office and the Health Department will also be closed. The Landfill will only be open from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. that day. Emergency services will be in normal operation.

Soup Sampler Supper is Sunday

All are invited to attend the Soup Sampler Supper, sponsored by the Daughters of Isabella, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the St. Patrick Parish Center, 4100 Broadway Ave. Several varieties of soup will be available.
