Kansas Heritage Exhibit

The Coronado Quivira Museum/Rice County Historical Society is celebrating Kansas Day 2012 with the creation of a special exhibit with a local tie to the bright lights of Hollywood. From Jan. 25-March 10, the special exhibition area at the museum will feature the exhibit "From Rice County to Hollywood: Mary Astor and Shirley Knight".

GREAT BEND - Jack Callaway was born Lonnie Alvin Cowden, Jr., on Oct. 19, 1923, to Lonnie Alvin Cowden and Effie Ellen Dines Cowden in Kansas City. He died Jan. 22 at Sterling Presbyterian Manor in Sterling. At the age of five, Jack was adopted by Walter Q. and Fannie Callaway and was given the name Jack. He was raised west of Galena on a small farm. He attended and graduated from a two room grade school in Cherokee County. Mary E. Wilhelm 1921 - 2012

Mary E. Wilhelm, 90, died Jan. 20 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Dec. 29, 1921 in rural Lewis, she was the daughter of Ralph and Grace (Atkins) Corzine. She graduated from Garfield High School and attended Fort Hays State University. On Sept. 26, 1946 she married Velmer A. Wilhelm in Garfield. He died on June 24, 1987. A resident of Great Bend since 1990, coming from the farm in Timken, she was a farm wife, homemaker, taught school, retail clerk, telephone operator and election board worker. George Dennis Martin

LARNED - George Dennis Martin, 63, passed away Jan. 21 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born April 15, 1948 in Great Bend, he was the son of George Earl and Maxine Salmans Martin. A lifetime area resident, except for 17 years when he was a warehouse manager for Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company in Batavia, Ill. He also assisted with the formation of Riverside Publishing Co. Chicago, Ill., and was the managing editor for the Tiller and Toiler Newspaper.

Betty L. Rajewski 1935 - 2012

Betty L. Rajewski, 76, died Jan. 21 at her home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 16, 1935 in Hays, she was the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Gottschalk) Kronewitter. On Feb. 14, 1956 she married Marvin H. Rajewski in Schoenchen. A Great Bend resident since 1959, coming from Hays, she was a clerk at Dollar Tree and had been a cashier in the Barton Community College Cafeteria. She was also owner of Arrow Supply.
