Members of youth groups from Great Bend's Assembly of God Church entertain between heats during last Saturday's big Easter egg scramble on the Great Bend High School football field. Hundreds of plastic eggs were thrown onto the field for each age group.
The cast of "Waiting for the Parade" rehearses the D-Day scene, for the Great Bend Community Theatre production. Set in Calgary, Canada, the play takes place over the span of several years. PAXICO - Lewis E. Massie, 87, died April 24 at the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka. Born June 3, 1923, at Highland County,Iowa, he was the son of John R. and Mary Hawk Massie. He was married to Vera Massie. She preceded him in death. He later married Andrea Diane Nienhuis. A resident of Kansas many years, he spent the past several years in Paxico. He had worked construction, was a truck driver and had owned and operated a service station.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Melissa G. Clark, 50, of Jefferson City, Mo., formerly of Hoisington, passed away Easter Sunday, April 24, at the Pin Oak Baptist Church in Mt. Sterling, Mo. Born Sept. 20, 1960, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of William "Bill" and Wilma (Willson) Meljo. A 1978 graduate of Hoisington High School, she received her Registered Nurse degree from Barton Community College in Great Bend. She was employed at Capital Regional Medical Center in Jefferson City, Mo., as a pediatric nurse.
HOISINGTON - Lea Lehmann, 96 died April 26 at Country Place Senior Living in Hoisington. Services are pending with Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington.
ELLINWOOD - Mildred Schiewe Holmgren, 93, died April 27 at Sunshine Home in Buhler. She was born Dec. 11, 1917, at Ellinwood, the daughter of Reinhold Schiewe and Adella Panning. She married Louis John Schiewe Sept. 6, 1943, at Paducah, Ky. He died July 6, 1962. She then married Eldred M. ("Swede") Holmgren on Oct. 18, 1969, in Ellinwood. He died Feb. 8, 1982.

At 9:49 a.m. Tuesday, Great Bend Fire Department was dispatched to 5817 16th St. Terrace for a report of an oven on fire. According to a report released Wednesday, crews found light smoke coming from Apartment 42. Inside, they found a smoldering fire along the baseboard of the wall behind the stove and extinguished the remaining fire.

GREAT BEND - James F. Adams, 86, went to his heavenly home Tuesday afternoon Aug. 19, 2014.
The Great Bend High School guidance counselors will host a freshman parent meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the GBHS auditorium. Counselors will review their responsibilities as counselors and also discuss attendance, grades, communication, office procedures, graduation requirements, qualified admissions/Kansas scholars requirements for getting into college and expectations for freshmen. This meeting will be about 30-45 minutes in length, depending on questions.
This month, Volunteers In Action/RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) recognizes their over 450 members who serve in this community every day to the tune of 44,000 hours last year an almost 22,000 hours this year so far.

We have been at war with Iraq for 24 years, starting with Operations Desert Shield and Storm in 1990. Shortly after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait that year, the propaganda machine began agitating for a US attack on Iraq. We all remember the appearance before Congress of a young Kuwaiti woman claiming that the Iraqis were ripping Kuwaiti babies from incubators. The woman turned out to be the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the US and the story was false, but it was enough to turn US opposition in favor of an attack.

RUSSELL COUNTY – Teresa Magna, 51, Spring Valley, Calif., has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Wichita. She is charged with one count of distributing methamphetamine and one count of interstate travel in furtherance of drug trafficking. The crime is alleged to have occurred Aug. 6 in Russell County.
