Local historian Robert Yarmer will share the story of early Kansas maps during a program at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at the Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village, 85 South U.S. 281, just south of Great Bend over the Arkansas River Bridge.
Barton Community College early childhood education students will lead activities for children participating in the observance of Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week Nov. 16 at the Great Bend Public Library.
Barton Community College instrumental music groups will present a Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The concert will feature the BCC Jazz Band, Prairie Winds Community Concert Band and Prairie Winds Jazz Ensemble. Steven Lueth, Barton's director of instrumental activities, is the conductor of these ensembles. The public is invited and admission is free.
Peace Church will celebrate their 125th Anniversary at the 10:30 a.m. worship on Nov. 21, 429 N.E. 140th Street, 5 miles north of Hudson. A meal will be served at noon. Tracey Christopher Smith, 43, of Great Bend, died Nov. 10 at his home. He was born June 10, 1967, in Great Bend, the son of Melba Jean (Foos) Smith. He was a police officer for the Great Bend Police Department and was administrator for Barton County Youth Care Girls' Home. He was a lifetime Great Bend resident.

The 11-year-old Quivira All-Star baseball team, comprised of Ellsworth, Claflin and Hoisington players, avenged three previous losses to CVL (the Cottonwood Valley League All-Stars) to claim the Cal Ripken State Baseball Championship in Garden City this past weekend for the 11-year-old Cal Ripken Division. The Quivira team will now advance to an 8-team, 5-state Regional tournament in Minot, North Dakota beginning July 31st.

TOPEKA (AP) - Kansas' highest court Friday overturned the death sentence of a man convicted of capital murder in connection with the killings a decade ago of a Great Bend woman and her boyfriend after she'd witnessed a robbery.
HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. - Robert Norman Alpers, 79, died May 31, in Hendersonville, N.C. A service will be held at Peace Church, 492 NE 140th Street, in Hudson, at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 25, with burial to follow. After the burial, family and friends are invited to a meal at Wheatland Café for visiting and reminiscing.
