RICE COUNTY - A Lyons woman was taken to the Lyons Hospital on Thursday following a rollover accident on U.S. 56 in Rice County, 0.2 miles east of 13th Road.

​Katharine Kay Brady 1944 - 2015

CHASE - Katharine Kay Brady, 70, died May 9, 2015, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. She was born Dec. 27, 1944, at Lyons, the daughter of Willis and Frances Haas White. She graduated from Chase High School in 1962. She was married to Melvin Brady. He preceded her in death. A longtime Chase resident, she was a homemaker and CNA at the Ellinwood Hospital.

Playground report on Rec agenda

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will hear a report from the playground advisory committee when it meets at 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. The board will also discuss goals for the coming year. There will be an executive session for discussion of a personnel matter. Board action will be needed in connection with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) National Congress, set for Sept. 15-17.

Local gas prices below state average

Average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 5.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.42 per gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,329 gas outlets in Kansas. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.66.

Naomi L. Converse 1938 - 2015

GARFIELD - Naomi L. Converse, 76, went to Heaven on May 10, at Via Christi Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita. Born Dec. 11, 1938, in Larned, she was the daughter of Vernon Henry and Ella Angela Wilson Meckfessel. A lifetime area resident, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandma, sister, nana and aunt. She farmed alongside her husband, Alan, for 58 years. She loved harvesting crops especially wheat. No one touched her combine! Most of all, she loved her husband and family. Her grandchildren filled her life with joy watching them dance, act, sing, and play sports. She made family time ...

Great Bend police received reports of criminal damage to property at two locations on Saturday morning. Someone threw paint on the side of the house at 1208 Morphy St., and someone spray painted the Funtime Bingo building at 2805 Ninth St.

Great Bend police made a narcotics arrest at 1:38 a.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of Jackson Street, after a driver allegedly failed to use her turn signal.

A 20-year-old man told Great Bend police he was battered by someone carrying a knife, around 9:46 p.m. Friday in the area of 19th and Holland St. He did not know the subject. An aggravated battery case was taken.

Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.

Thunder on the Plains opens NHRA West Central Division

S.R.C.A Dragstrip will host Thunder on the Plains on May 15-17 at 455 W. Barton County Rd.; 2½ miles west of Great Bend on the old Air Force base. The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.
