Bill and Stephanie Kramer announce the engagement of their daughter, Sarah Kramer, to Ryan Pfeifer, son of Galen and Cathy Pfeifer of Hays. Grandparents of the couple are Wilmer Michel of Hays and the late Dora Michel, Irene Pfeifer of Ellis and the late Albert Pfeifer, Esther Herl of Hays and the late Mel Herl, and the late Eddie and Valeria Kramer.
The Great Bend City Slickers 4-H club met on June 20 at the 4-H building. Seven members, two leaders and four parents were present. Members shared their 4-H projects to be entered in the fair. Members were reminded of the cookie jar/banner and bbq tickets for the fair to be held on July 10-14th. They were also reminded to help at the fair and clean up afterward. A demonstration was presented by Nicole Likes. Talks were given by Stephen Crawford and Hayden Honomichil.
With the recent hot weather, more trees in the region are starting to once again show signs of drought stress. Branches are losing their leaves, many trees are showing exit holes from recent borer attacks, and still many more are just dying outright and needing to be removed. All of these signs of tree sickness and mortality are a cumulating of the past several years of hot temperatures, very little rain, and high, hot winds adding to the drying out process. August will be here shortly and even though the drought persists, conditions are much better than a year ago at this time. The final grade on this year's summer crops comes will be yield and quality. But as everyone in school knows, mid-term grades give you an idea of where you are at. With that in mind, what are the mid-term grades for this year's summer crops?
The annual Tompkins family reunion was held on July 21 at the IOOF Hall in St. John. Twenty-seven members were in attendance. A carry-in dinner was held. Hosting the occasion were Mark and Doris Tompkins and Kevin and Laura Davis. During the business meeting, Don and Martha Tompkins were recognized for those who traveled the farthest. A picture session of the various families present was taken.
