OLMITZ - Marguerite M. Schneider, 76, died Dec. 3 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born Sept. 28, 1935 in LaCrosse, she was the daughter of William O. and Clara (Busch) Maneth. On Oct. 4, 1955 she married Marvin L. Schneider in LaCrosse. They were married 56 years. A lifetime resident of Olmitz, she was a homemaker, a writer for the Hoisington Dispatch, worked for the Rush County News, and farmed in both Barton and Rush Counties. She was a "reading Grandma" at the Otis-Bison Elementary school, a blood donor, and an avid quilter and seamstress.
LARNED - Althea Shuss Vratil passed from this earth on Dec. 3. Born Sept. 23, 1922 in Larned, she recently resided in Overland Park, but had spent nearly all her life in Larned. She left school in 1943 to marry Frank before he was shipped overseas in World War II. Althea finished her degree 50 years later at the age of 71. Althea was a devoted wife, a selfless mother, and a doting grandmother. She loved her hometown of Larned and enjoyed playing golf and substitute teaching. She also loved everything KU.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission Board will renew GBRC liability insurance and vote on health insurance when it meets at 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. Information items on the agenda include training, a coaches' guide for youth sports and plans for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball and softball tournament coming to Great Bend.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will present "Flowers Popping Color," a free Stop N' Learn program, from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St.
Barton Community College will be closed on Friday, April 18 and Monday, April 21. Barton's Center for Adult Education and Shafer Art Gallery will also be closed. The college's regular class schedule and office hours will resume Tuesday, April 22.

This has been a very exciting week. I have enjoyed my five Canadian friends who come almost every year to hunt turkeys with their traditional archery equipment. They got three turkeys and departed on Thursday. Being up by 4:30 a.m. to get coffee and head out for 10 days in a row gives us time to re-affirm our friendship.
