Passenger cell phone photos showed slews of plastic bags brimming with human waste, and lumpy, raw sewage floating in big puddles.

Robert D. Dougherty 1931-2013

Robert D. Dougherty, 81, died Feb. 18, 2013 at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Aug. 22, 1931 at Casper, Wyo. the son of Brian and Dorthy (Dunlap) Dougherty. He married Linda Sanko April 21, 1965 at Great Bend. He was owner and operator of Cambria Corporation since 1967.

Neighbor to Neighbor Food Drive to benefit Barton County Food Bank

Dillon's, the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Harvesters and the Kansas Food Bank are teaming up for a state-wide food drive called Neighbor to Neighbor. The food drive will kicked off on Monday and run will through Ag Day on March 19th. Dillon's customers will have the opportunity to purchase non-perishable food items to place in donation bins and they will also be able to donate either $1 or $5 at the register. Average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 5.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.42 per gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,329 gas outlets in Kansas. GARFIELD - Naomi L. Converse, 76, went to Heaven on May 10, at Via Christi Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita. Born Dec. 11, 1938, in Larned, she was the daughter of Vernon Henry and Ella Angela Wilson Meckfessel. A lifetime area resident, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandma, sister, nana and aunt. Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.

Thunder on the Plains opens NHRA West Central Division

S.R.C.A Dragstrip will host Thunder on the Plains on May 15-17 at 455 W. Barton County Rd.; 2½ miles west of Great Bend on the old Air Force base. The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.
