Former Great Bend resident Kory Brunson, leader of the Denver, Colo., Kory Brunson Band, sings at the Crest Theater, Thursday night in Great Bend. The band gave a benefit concert for the Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation. The title song of the band's newest CD, "Hard Country," gives new meaning to the phrase, "more cowbell," and Brunson said he wrote the song "Take Me Home" with Great Bend in mind.
Although enrollment at Barton Community College's Great Bend campus declined by about 6 percent, the college saw an overall 6 percent enrollment increase in the summer and fall of 2011, compared to the same time in 2010, college officials announced.

The first Legislative Coffee of 2012, originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 28, in Great Bend, has been canceled due to a conflict with Kansas Day events. Legislative coffees are still scheduled for Feb. 25 and March 24.
SALINA - Gary D. Apel, 58, of Salina, died Jan. 10. Born Jan. 23, 1953, in Sterling, he was the son of Norman and Marilyn (Eves) Apel. Gary was a welder and fabricator for the Blue Goose Company of Great Bend and Tony's of Salina. He was also a goat rancher at the Apel Farm.
DES MOINES, Iowa - Keith A. Peters, 65, died Jan.10 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Born Jan. 3, 1947, he was the son of Tillman and Beulah Christine Barr Peters in Ransom. He was a 1965 graduate of Utica High School and attended Greer Automotive Technical School. A lifetime farmer and avid gardener, he retired from the United States Postal Service.
LA CROSSE - Gerald R. "Jerry" Kline, 80, died Jan. 12 at Hays Medical Center in Hays He was born Nov. 12, 1931, at LaCrosse, to Edmond and Charlet (Schaffer) Kline. He married Mary Anne (Taylor) on April 24, 1952, at LaCrosse. He was raised in La Crosse, and owned Jerry's Tavern, Kline's Radiator Repair, from 1953 to 1965, and the Wishbone Café, all in LaCrosse, from 1965 to 1969. He was a coordinator for Nickerson Farms and was a manager of Russell Nickerson Farms from 1970 to 1974. He moved to Hays in 1973. He then worked for ...
Elaine L. Johnson, 80, died Jan. 12 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born March 21, 1931, at Alva, Okla., she was the daughter of James Arthur and Lorinda L. (Mason) Lane. She married Harold Johnson on Dec., 21, 1947, at Alva, Okla. A Great Bend resident since 1999, coming from South Fork, Colo., and Macksville, she worked at the Larned Greenhouse and was a clerk for Food 4 Less and Dillon's in Great Bend.
ELLINWOOD -Ellinwood School/Community Library will be closed for cleaning July 22- 25. It will reopen on July 28.
Star of Hope is proud to announce the dedication of the new church building in Hesse, Haiti. The original church building was rendered useless and unsafe by the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. On June 28, more than 250 people gathered in the new mountain church to dedicate it to the use of the people in the area. The church is located next to the new Hesse School also rebuilt since the 2010 earthquake. In addition to being used for church services it will also be used by the school for assemblies.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Leonard Loraine Mullenix, 94, died July 13 at his home in Las Cruces, N.M. He was born Dec. 9, 1919 at Chase, the son of George and Lola (Fuson) Mullenix.

Willa Mae Springfeldt, 93, died July 10, at Almost Home in Great Bend. Born July 11, 1920, in Springfield, Mo., she was the daughter of William and Ethel Mae (Renfro) Teem. On Nov. 23, 1940, she married Virgil L. Springfeldt in Cottonwood Falls. He died on June 7, 1992. A resident of Great Bend since 1972, coming from Bushton, she and her husband were owner and operator of IGA of Bushton and Kwik Shop in Great Bend. She enjoyed playing the piano and cello.
Dennis A. Munoz, 66, longtime resident of Great Bend, passed away at his Great Bend home on Wednesday afternoon, July 9. Born Dec. 10, 1947, in Great Bend, he was the son of Frank and Katherine (Pyles) Munoz. In 1965, he graduated from Great Bend High School.
HOLLYWOOD, FLA.- Esther Dunham, 89, died Dec. 2, 2013 at Golfcrest Health Care Center, Hollywood, Fla. Born July 16, 1924 at Scottsbluff, Neb., she was the daughter of Lee Selby and Alice Butler. She married Jack Dunham June 9, 1945 at Hays, Kan. A former resident of Great Bend before moving to Florida, she was employed at J. C. Penney and the Barton County Health Department until her retirement.
ELLINWOOD--Joyce Marie Fullbright, 83, passed away in Ellinwood on July 10. Born Oct. 1, 1930 in Georgetown, Ark., she was the daughter of Briles and Myrtle (Chambers) Andrews.
Connie Rosalie Peacock, 91, died July 11 at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. Born Feb. 21, 1923 at WaKeeney, she was the daughter of Pete and Antonia (Solowski) Gregorcyk.
Larry Randall Miller, 55, died May 31, in San Diego, Calif. Born March 10, 1959 at Great Bend, he was the son of Harold S. and Dorothy J. Miller. He joined the Coast Guard in 1978, working as a corpsman and was awarded a letter from President Ronald Reagan for saving a life. He attended Wichita State University on the GI Bill and later worked as a respiratory therapist and cardiology technician. He married Bernadette Alison December 31, 1990 at San Diego.
OLATHE - Christopher James Gross, 41, passed away July 5, 2014 at St. Joseph Medical Center from complications of his battle with brain cancer.
GREAT BEND - Lloyd E. White, 81, died July 8, 2014 at Western Plains Medical Center, Dodge City.
