RUSH CENTER - Leonard C. Oborny, 74, died Jan. 29 at his home in Rush Center. Born Dec. 29, 1937, in La Crosse, he was the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Kladik) Oborny. In 1955 he graduated from La Crosse Rural High School. On Jan. 6, 1959, he married Alice R. Nordman at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Olmitz. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was a service tire repairman for Farmer's Co-op in Rush Center.
HUTCHINSON - Richard Alan "Rick" Michael, loving husband, father, "Papa," brother and friend, went to be with his divine savior on Jan. 28 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born April 14, 1952, in Lyons, he was 59. On Sept. 14, 1979, he married Tonya Jean Rojas in Hutchinson. He spent many years as an oilfield driller throughout the Midwest. In 1991 he graduated from Hutchinson Community College and in 1993 he received his L.B.S.W. as a Phi Theta Kappa graduate of Bethel College. HOISINGTON - Henry E. "Ed" Eichman died Jan. 30, 2012 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington in care of the funeral home.
Betty Ann Debes, 70, died Jan. 28 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Dec. 28, 1941, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Joseph A. and Marie R. (Oberle) Debes. She was a longtime resident of Great Bend, coming from Odin.
This Friday is the last day for pheasant hunters to submit entries in the Great Bend Recreation Commission's annual Longest Tail Feather Contest, Program Coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick said. The winner will receive a $30 Chamber Gift certificate donated by Goss Insurance Agency.

The event was sponsored by two Barton student organizations – Community Student Organization and Phi Theta Kappa. Other activities included soccer, baseball, basketball and bingo.
Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St., will be showing free movies served with free popcorn this month, starting with an after-school movie at 3:30 p.m. this Friday. Open to all ages, the after-school movie is an animated blockbuster featuring race car Lightning McQueen and friends competing in the first-ever World Grand Prix.

LARNED - Delores June Clawson, 84, died Jan. 29 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. She was born June 28, 1927, at Great Bend, the daughter of Joseph and Katie Rowe Koelsch. She married Virgil M. Clawson on March 24, 1955, at Newkirk, Okla. He died on Aug. 11, 2007. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a homemaker and had worked at the Old Blue Goose and Harvest Inn restaurants.

The State Fair is in high gear and today is Sept. 7. A strong cold front moved through this past Friday and parts of the area have received fairly significant amounts of precipitation over the last week. Much of the immediate area was listed under the Moderate Drought category last Thursday but parts of eastern Barton, Rice, and Ellsworth Counties are a bit better and rated as Moderately Dry. Some producers question this since they are dealing with fields too wet for equipment while other missed out on the rains. It's almost time to plant the 2015 winter wheat ...
