Clay Steffen Schmidt 1960 - 2012

PAWNEE ROCK - Clay Steffen Schmidt, 52, died July 24 at his home in Pawnee Rock. Born June 14, 1960 in Larned he was the son of Jarold and Ruth Petersen Schmidt. A lifetime area resident, he sold auto parts at Carquest. On March 26, 1983 he married Crystal Davidson in Larned. She survives.

GARFIELD - Naomi L. Converse, 76, went to Heaven on May 10, at Via Christi Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita. Born Dec. 11, 1938, in Larned, she was the daughter of Vernon Henry and Ella Angela Wilson Meckfessel. A lifetime area resident, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandma, sister, nana and aunt. She farmed alongside her husband, Alan, for 58 years. She loved harvesting crops especially wheat. No one touched her combine! Most of all, she loved her husband and family. Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.

Thunder on the Plains opens NHRA West Central Division

S.R.C.A Dragstrip will host Thunder on the Plains on May 15-17 at 455 W. Barton County Rd.; 2½ miles west of Great Bend on the old Air Force base. The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.
