The following meals will be served Jan. 16 through Jan. 20. The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.

KWEC offers winter kids programs

KWEC has the cure for boredom – winter nature programs! Kids will turn the birdhouse gourds grown in KWEC's garden into homes for our feathered friends, make a feather bookmark, play games and of course learn more about the world around them and the creatures living there. Josh Huber joins Sunflower Electric Power Corporation

Sunflower Electric Power Corporation announces that Josh Huber has joined the company as a Relay Technician. Josh joined Sunflower on Jan. 9. He will perform the work associated with and including, but not limited to, the installation, testing, inspection, calibration, and repair of all system protection devices, transducers, and equipment (electro-mechanical and electronic relays, protective controls, switchboards, and other substation equipment) as related to Sunflower's and the Members' electric transmission and distribution system.

American Legion hosts meeting on VA benefits

American Legion Post 180, 1011 Kansas, Great Bend, will host a meeting for all veterans and their families who wish to learn more about their earned VA benefits from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. on Wednesday. Veterans and their families who have specific questions regarding VA benefits are urged to attend this meeting. We'd also like to extend a personal invitation to eligible veterans and spouses to join our organization and take part in the many programs and services available.

Bone Health program set

An educational program to discuss bone health will be presented at 1 p.m Friday, Jan. 20 at the Great Bend Senior Center. Donna Krug, Family and Consumer Science Agent with K-State Research and Extension – Barton County, will be the speaker. Krug will share information about foods that can be eaten to improve bone health. The Program is free and open to everyone.

Move Into Health program set

Everyone is different. Calorie needs depend on a variety of factors including age, gender, and activity level. Most people do not share the same beliefs about what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle. Donna Krug, Barton County Extension Agent, will present the educational program, "Move into Health" at noon Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th Street. Participants will receive educational material to help track their nutrition and physical activity mission statement. Food and activity logs are the first step toward changing a limiting belief. The program is free and open to everyone.

Parnassus Club

The Parnassus Club met on Jan. 10. Amanda Pfenninger has agreed to judge for voice and piano at the Spring auditions. A motion was made to allow $100 for the judges fee and $50 for travel expense. The motion carried.

County to observe Martin Luther King Day

Barton County Office Buildings will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, for Martin Luther King Day. The Records Division of the Sheriff's Office and the Health Department will also be closed. The Landfill will only be open from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. that day. Emergency services will be in normal operation.

Soup Sampler Supper is Sunday

Helen Marie Steincamp 1930 - 2015

Helen Marie Steincamp, 84, died Jan. 10, 2015, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. Born Oct. 12, 1930, at Redwing, she was the daughter of Joseph R. and Anna Marie (Proksch) Dietz. She was a 1948 graduate of Hoisington High School.
