WINFIELD – Green Team Southwestern was founded in 2008 in response to the growing interest in environmental stewardship on the Southwestern College campus in Winfield. In 2007, President Dick Merriman made Southwestern a charter signatory of the American College and University President's Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) and students petitioned the administration of the college asking that a change towards a more environmentally conscious campus be made. Mary Wilhelm 90th

Mary Wilhelm celebrated her 90th birthday on Dec. 29th. She grew up on a farm outside of Garfield and was the youngest daughter of Grace and Ralph Corzine. After graduating from Garfield High School, she attended Fort Hays State. She held many occupations in her life such as telephone operator and school teacher in a one room schoolhouse. Her most important occupation was that of wife and mother. She married Velmer Wilhelm in 1946 and they later had three children, Gary, JoAnn and Carol.

Survey to begin on US-56 Highway in Rice County

Starting around Monday, April 20, and continuing for three weeks, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will have a field survey team surveying a section of US-56 Highway in Rice County. The survey area will include the section of US-56 highway 1,200 feet east and 1,200 feet west of the US-56 bridge over the overflow channel for the Little Arkansas River located 1.1 miles east of the US-56 highway intersection with K-46 highway. The purpose of the survey is to gather information necessary to create detailed designs for future highway improvements.

Mary M. Wondra 1922 -2015

ODIN – Mary M. Wondra, 92, died April 12, at Great Bend Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 12, 1922, in Odin, she was the daughter of Joseph V. and Frances M. (Tinkel) Jenisch. She graduated from Odin High School. On April 29, 1946, she married William Wondra in Odin. He died Nov. 13, 1996. A lifetime resident of the Odin and Claflin area, she was a homemaker.
