There are those who dare to suggest that Texas unduly restricts firearms. They object at having to take a safety class and obey certain rules governing the concealment of their deadly weapons. Their solution is called "constitutional carry," or the belief that the Constitution allows them to openly wield guns without restriction, apology, or safety training.

Local hospitals to assess community health needs

Over the next three months, Clara Barton Hospital and Ellinwood District Hospital will be updating the Barton County Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The assessment is a follow-up to the 2012 CHNA, an IRS requirement of all 501(c)3 hospitals to conduct a community health needs assessment and adopt an implementation strategy every three years.

​James Rayford Millwee 1930 - 2015

QUINTER - James Rayford Millwee, 84, died Feb. 9, 2015, at the Gove County LTCF in Quinter. He was born Oct. 26, 1930, on a farm outside Crockett, Texas, to James Sidney and Lou Ella Morgan Millwee. He graduated from Austonio High School in 1947, then moved to Houston, Texas, and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for three years.

Panther Classic Wrestling results for Hoisington

The Hoisington Cardinal Wrestling team tasted for the first time in 6 tournaments since the Christmas Break what it is like to not be a tournament champion when they finished 2nd at the Phillipsburg Panther Classic Wrestling Tournament this past Saturday. The Cardinals did not go down without a fight as the tournament Championship was not decided until the final match. GBHS boys swim team state qualifiers

The GBHS boys swim team have qualified 3 relay teams and two swimmers in individual events for the State Tournament on Feb. 20 and 21. Cole Pierce qualified in the 500m Freestyle and Joshua Schridde qualified in the 50m Free, 100m Free, 100m Butterfly and the 200m Individual Medley. Four other individuals have state consideration times: Dawson Clark 100m Butterfly; Sean Williams 100m Breaststroke; Connor Furrey 100m Backstroke and 500m Free; and Phane Pedigo 200m IM and 100m Backstroke. These individuals along with Ryan Romine will most likely participate in the qualified relays.

Extension Programs Focus on Health and Wellness

It is fairly common that my educational programs and workshops emphasize a common theme of health and wellness. The annual Walk Kansas program is just around the corner, so it is time to start rounding up your team members for that successful program. Packets are ready for team captains to pick up at our office and the Great Bend Recreation Commission. I also plan to deliver some packets to the recreation commissions in Hoisington and Ellinwood.
