Christmas is past, but Great Bend's Trail of Lights will remain lit until the new year, Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said.
Christmas may just be over, but members of Great Bend Community Theatre are making plans for Valentine's Day. Auditions for the next GBCT production, "Enchanted April" by Matthew Barber, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, and 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at the Crest Theater. Performance dates are Feb. 14 - 17.
ELLINWOOD - William N. (Bill) Johnson, 81, died Dec. 19 at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Dec. 11, 1931 in Winfield, he was the son of Dee Johnson and Juanita M. Ermey Johnson. On Feb. 19, 1954 he married Joan Hauser in Las Cruces, N.M. She died on Aug. 25, 1991. A long-time resident of Ellinwood, formerly of Ark City, he was a Division Engineer at Marlette Homes and service station manager at Bird Oil Company, both of Great Bend.
NESS CITY - Fern Ruth Delaney, 95, died on Dec. 22 at the Ness County Hospital in Ness City. She was born on July 14, 1917 southwest of Bazine.
This year, the politically correct gestures of seasonal salutation (Happy Holidays, Season's Greetings, etc.), which for too long have served as substitutes for the real thing, have become vacuous, stale and boring. This year, somehow, they seem especially inadequate to express the sentiment we so desperately need to hear at this moment in time.
BURDETT- Leora Lou Steffen, 81, left this world on December 23, at Larned Healthcare Center. Born Sept. 30, 1931 in Larned, she was the daughter of Eldon S. and Luella Marie Bauer Lynam. On Aug. 13, 1950, she married Cecil Raymond Steffen in Burdett. He died on Aug. 16, 2011. A longtime resident of Burdett, she was a homemaker.
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by the Chosen Wok, 3908 10th Street, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Ambassador in charge will be Marty Steinert with greeters Connie Oetken and Jim Vopat. Coffee, doughnuts and door prizes will be available.
Connie Sue Starks, 50, died Dec. 22 at her home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 7, 1962 in Hays, she was the daughter of Gene and Beatrice (Southerland) Parks. On June 10, 1984 she married Terry Starks in Hutchinson. A resident of Great Bend for 19 years, coming from Hutchinson, she was a homemaker.
Terri Lynn McCord, 54, died Dec. 23 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born March 20, 1958 in Memphis, Tenn., she was the daughter of William and Barbara Donaldson. On Aug. 27, 1976 she married Larry McCord in Salem, Ark. A resident of Great Bend since 1983, coming from Ash Flat, Ark., she was a homemaker and Early Childhood Special Education Para and bus driver for Unified School District #428 in Great Bend.

It's only human nature to want to take action after such a harrowing traumatic event. To do something. Anything, to protect our kids. And make sure that Newtown never ever happens again. Here. There. Anywhere.

On Sept. 27, Great Bend High School's electric vehicle (EV) team competed against other area high schools in the Kansas High Plains ElectroRally in Hays. It was the culmination of several months of planning, designing, building and testing an electric vehicle. The race and photos of the team were highlighted in the Dec. 2012 edition of Kansas Country Living magazine.
