Matthew Dobratz of Great Bend has accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). Matthew will be honored during an Induction Convocation this fallon the campus of Kansas State University.

Esther Riedl (Gaudreault) Phillips 90th
Esther Riedl (Gaudreault) Phillips will celebrate her 90th birthday with a card shower. A resident of Columbus, formerly of Larned, she was born on May 6, 1921 in Rosell. She has three children, Nancy Evans, Marie Nepple, and James Phillips; and four grandchildren, Phil Evans, Paul Evans, Kelli Brandt, and Julie Frampton.

Shawn and Allison Brock announce the birth of their daughter, Sierra Marie Brock, on April 3 in Great Bend. She weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. and was 20 in. long.

Three seniors from Great Bend High School were recently awarded the Summerfield Scholarship and admitted into the University of Kansas Honors Program. The Scholars Recognition Reception took place on April 3 in Lawrence at the University of Kansas Campus in Hasinger Hall. Dr. Kala Stroup, a Great Bend High School graduate, Woman's Hall of Fame Recipient at the University of Kansas and Watkins-Berger Scholarship Alumna was the Keynote Speaker for this very prestigious award banquet. ...

The Heartland Cancer Center Cancer Support Group meeting will be held 2 p.m. onTuesday at the Heartland Cancer Center, 204 Cleveland. The meeting is open to all cancer survivors and their families. Anyone wanting to know more about the disease, treatment, caring for or living with cancer are invited. New comers are always welcome. The Sterling College Biology Department was recently represented at the Kansas Academy of Science Annual Meeting held on April 8-9 in Baldwin City. Two students, Leonore Enfield of Raymond, and Tyler Wise of Clearwater, gave a research presentation titled, "Effects of Prairie Restoration on Small Mammals."

Kansas CRP meetings for landowners prior to signup hosted by PF
Pheasants Forever is hosting fifty-one informational meetings across Kansas for landowners and agricultural producers in advance of the USDA Farm Service Agency's Conservation Reserve Program general sign-up that runs May 20 through June 14. Led by Pheasants Forever Farm Bill Wildlife Biologists, landowners can learn how to increase their farm or ranch income while creating wildlife habitat in the process.

USD 428, Holy Family, Central Kansas Christian Academy and HeadStart Schools
The following meals will be served May 13 through May 17. The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms out there! The month of May has arrived and that means a frenzy of activity for families who are celebrating Mother's day today and graduations now or in the weeks ahead. I am truly blessed to have my mother-in-law, daughter, and granddaughters close by. It is a joy to spend time together at a moment's notice. Hopefully your weekend plans include some good family time with plenty of hugs.
