Kenneth D. "Ken" Williams, 74, died on April 13 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Feb. 14, 1939 in Stephenville, Texas, he was the son of Myrl and Ruth (Onions) Williams. On Aug. 15, 1959 he married Nancy Giebler in Hays. She survives. Growing up in Liberal, he was a Great Bend resident since 1963, coming from Hays. Grace Denman will celebrate her 101st birthday with a card shower. Grace was born on April 23, 1912, in Pueblo, Colo. She moved to Scott City at the age of 2 where she grew up. She moved to California and then to Great Bend where she has been a resident for the past 25 years.

The Community Scholarship, Inc. of Claflin awarded scholarships to 19 graduates and 14 alumni at the Central Plains High School graduation ceremony on May 17. Many donors, alumni, and organizations made it possible to award $38,695.00 to the graduates and alumni to help with their college expenses.

This year is a special one for entomologists. The 17 year periodical cicadas are due to come out of the ground, where they have been developing, to reproduce and lay their eggs. No specimens of this particular cicada have been documented in Barton County, but they are in neighboring counties, so keep your eyes and ears open.
