As National Nutrition Month comes to an end for another year I hope you and your family have found ways to add more color to your meals. Progress Club Learns About “The Gift”

Local sculptor Chet Cale recently presented a program to members of the Progress Club at the home of Karen Becker. Using a variety of visual aids, he explained the processes involved in creating "The Gift," from early drawings to the casting and final installation of the three bronze figures in front of the Barton County Courthouse.

Boring insects

Well, my first week at Barton County Research and Extension has definitely has not been boring to say the least! I have hit the ground running and am learning something new every day. I have had several subjects brought to me, but one that has been talked about several times is boring insects in trees. This made me curious on why I would hear about this problem so much in a week's time, so I set out to do some research to see what I could dig up.

The Sears Hometown Store of Great Bend has been named a 2013 Sears Hometown Premier Store. This award recognizes Sears Hometown Stores across the country that consistently offers the highest levels of customer service, outstanding store performance and standards. At the end of last year, the Great Bend store was one of only 293 locations throughout the U.S. to receive this national recognition.

USD 428, Holy Family, Central Kansas Christian Academy and HeadStart Schools

The following meals will be served April 1 through April 5. The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.

Students interact with author via Google+

With advancements in technology, there are more opportunities for creative teaching methods in the classroom. Professor of Theology and Ministry Dr. Henry Lederle took advantage of the possibilities that technology provides by inviting the author of a book used in his Intro to Missions class to interact with the students through Google+ Hangout, a video chat and conference service. Fritz Kling, author of "The Meeting of the Waters: 7 Global Currents that will Propel the Future Church," joined the class for a day, engaging in discussion with the students and answering their questions.

Public service award

Ellsworth County Emergency Management and the Russell 911 Communications Advisory Board announces the 2013 Emergency Worker/Volunteer of the Year presented during the NWS Spotter Meeting. In past years, the Emergency Worker/Volunteer of the Year award was given to a deserving individual. This year was no different with three nominations for Emergency Worker/Volunteer of the year. The 911 Advisory Board decided on one award.

On Wednesday, March 27, Housing Opportunities, Inc. Board of Directors and staff celebrated the ground breaking of Bedford Place LLC, their 12th income based, affordable rental property. Bedford Place will be an income based rental property for seniors, age 55 and over, and the disabled.
