Great Bend Evening Lions Club Candy Day

The Great Bend Evening Lions held their Candy Day on Oct. 6 at WalMart Super Center, North Main Dillons, and Waters True Value. The Lions were giving out mints for pocket change all day in a effort to raise money for a local scholarship and eye glass replacement to help individuals of the Barton County area. Cameron University Speech and Debate Team kicks off season

Cameron University's Speech and Debate team has gotten off to a stellar start in forensics competition this semester, taking first in Lincoln-Douglas debate sweepstakes and second in combined debate sweepstakes at the recent Debate On the Plains tournament, hosted by Hutchinson Community College. One week prior, the team placed fourth overall in combined individual events and debate sweepstakes at the Bob R. Derryberry Memorial Season Opener, hosted by Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo.

2012 KOA Fall Eyecare Conference

More than 280 optometrists and 185 optometric assistants attended the 2012 Kansas Optometric Association Fall Eyecare Conference in Wichita. Optometrists attending were able to receive 13 hours of continuing education toward the 24 hours required for re-licensure. Among those attending were Drs. Mark Judd, Russell McCaulley, and Chad Premer of Great Bend.

John and Julie Hein will celebrate their 40th anniversary on Oct. 15. The couple was married on Oct. 15, 1972, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington. John is retired from Dillon's after 36 years and Julie is retired from Landmark National Bank after 27 years. The couple has a daughter and son-in-law, Joelle and Jay Jacobs; and two grandchildren, Jensen and Jozie. They will celebrate the occasion with a family dinner in November.

'Life is Beautiful' showing Friday

The 1997 motion picture, "Life is Beautiful," will be shown at 6:15 p.m. Friday, March 27, as part of the Heartland Center for Spirituality's latest series of "Movies with a Message." Fish fry is Friday

HOISINGTON - Everyone is invited to an "All You Can Eat" fish fry from 5:30-7:30 p.m. tonight at the Hoisington Knights of Columbus Hall. Members will be serving Alaskan pollock, coleslaw, scalloped potatoes and drinks. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 4-11 and children under 4 eat for free. All proceeds support area charities.

A new video about Jesus for the Easter season will be released Friday by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Elders from the Great Bend ward said the video is about 2-3 minutes long and can be found on the website www.HeLives.mormom.org.

Illusionist Reza to perform Friday

Reza the Illusionist will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Crest Theater. The program is a benefit for Star of Hope and for Great Bend Community Theatre. Tickets are $17 for adults, $11 for students; children under 5 will be admitted free.

Lenten Luncheon: Central Baptist

The final Lenten luncheon in the local series will be at noon on Wednesday, April 1 at Central Baptist Church, 3301 Lakin Ave. The host pastor is Dr. Joan Harrington, and the speaker will be Adam Wutka, pastor at St. Mark Lutheran Church. A meal is served at noon (not earlier) and the meeting ends at 1 p.m. A freewill offering is suggested to defray the expenses of the host congregation.
