Barton Community College will offer local and area high school students a chance to explore non-traditional careers in a Breaking Traditions event set for June 7-8. The program is for 2011-12 high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, and 2011 high school graduates.
Barton Community College has announced enrollment times for its summer 2011 outreach courses. The college's summer bulletin of classes lists all outreach courses and workshops. Bulletins are available at area libraries and high schools. Enrollment for outreach classes in Russell is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Russell High School. Courses include English Composition I (ITV), Introduction to Sociology (ITV), English Composition II and College Algebra. Barton Community College will offer a Certified Medication Aide Course from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, May 7 through June 11. Clinicals will take place at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation. Classroom sessions will be at KansasWorks, 1025 Main. Participants must be Certified Nurse Aides to enroll. The Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1024 Main, will have a dance from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, with the band Country Plus. This event is a fundraiser for the ongoing effort to restore and re-light the neon "eagle" signs outside the building. Admission is $3 per person or $5 per couple.

Billie Lou Burgardt, 61, died April 1 at Rock Island Rehab and Nursing Center in Rock Island, Ill. Born Feb. 18, 1950, in WaKeeney, she was the daughter of Fred J. and Christina (Mai) Mai. She married Elmer S. Burgardt on Aug. 11, 1989, in WaKeeney.
HOLYROOD - David N. Presley, 65, died April 30, in Ellsworth. Born May 12, 1945 in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of Mack Lee and Ruby Jessie (Minor) Presley. On Aug 17, 1990 he married Linda Diane Heglin in Kodiak, Alaska. She survives. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration as an electrician and recently worked at Orscheln's in Great Bend.
